Corpus Christi Sharks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - The Corpus Christi Sharks landed two players on the National Conference All-af2 First Team the club announced today. Estus Hood was named a First Team defensive lineman (DL) while Ivory McCann was named the top special teams (ST) player. Overall, players from 24 of the league's 30 teams were selected to either the American or National Conference All-af2 First and Second Teams as voted on by af2 head coaches and media.
Both Hood and McCann were integral parts of a Sharks franchise that rebounded to win five of their final six games.
Hood, a 6' 3" - 275 lb OL/DL, was one of the team's most consistent players. He anchored a Sharks defensive unit that developed into one of the stingiest in the League - leading the team in sacks (8.5) and tackles for a loss (12) while finishing fourth overall in total tackles with 31. The 25 year old, who played at the University of Illinois, began the year in training camp with the Arena Football League's (AFL) Austin Wranglers before joining the Sharks for the start of the af2 season.
McCann, the electrifying WR/DB/KR was a fan favorite from the beginning. At just 5' 9" - 174 lbs, he was often one of the smallest players on the field, while posting some of the League's biggest return numbers. The 24 year old Texas Tech product led the team in kick-off returns with 1,273 yards and three touchdowns including a long of 57-yards. He also led the team in field goal returns with an amazing 37.8 yard average (on just a 50 yard field) and two touchdowns including a season long 56 yard return. McCann spent time last season with the Las Vegas Gladiators (AFL) before joining the Sharks.
Both players joined the Sharks organization with one thing in mind, a return to the Arena Football League (AFL). According to Sharks Head Coach, Michael Trigg, both have a legitimate chance to realize that goal next season. "Ivory and Estus have the ability to play at that level and I'd be surprised if they weren't given a chance somewhere in the AFL next season. Both guys are talented athletes who worked extremely hard at improving this season, they are deserving of this recognition. They never missed a game or a practice - they are professionals in every sense of the word." said Trigg. He added, "Developing players and providing them an opportunity to play at the AFL level is what sets us apart. To have two guys named to the First Team in our inaugural season reinforces that we're doing things the right way."
