After starting the summer with the Salamanders, Ben LaSpaluto joined the Sharks this week. In his return trip to Ting Park, the freshman wasted no time saying hello to his former teammates. On the third pitch of the game, LaSpaluto smacked a solo homer to left field to get the game going for Wilmington (5-7).
The night though did not go as planned for the visitors. In the bottom of the first, Holly Springs (4- 9) answered the Sharks opening run. The Salamanders scored two runs on one hit, two walks and an error by Wilmington to take a 2-1 lead.
In the second, the Sharks answered on Zach Bridges first RBI of the summer. The catcher drove home Ayden Karraker to knot the game back at two.
In the bottom half, the Salamanders took the lead right back against Nick Bruno (0-1). Angel Zarate doubled, followed by a Jacob Maekawa single to make it 3-2 Holly Springs.
The game continued to go back and forth as the Sharks pushed across another in third. Paxton Wallace singled and came home to score on the second of two errors by the Salamanders in the inning to make it 3-3.
All was quiet, until Peyton Isaacson jumped on 1-2 pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth. The Salamanders first baseman hit his first home run of the summer to right field to make it 4-3.
That is all the cushion that Christian Scafidi (1-0) would need out of the bullpen. The righty from the University of Pennsylvania came in to throw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out 11 Sharks.
Nick Bruno was the losing pitcher in his longest outing of the summer. The UNCW righty went five full innings allowing four runs; three earned on six hits and struck out six.
Colt Springs and Eddie Hiott combined for three scoreless innings of relief and allowed just one hit.
The Sharks struck out 18 times at the plate against Holly Springs, which is tied for the most this season. Wilmington also struck out 18 times on June 1st at Morehead City.
Wilmington has also lost four games in a row, the longest losing streak of the summer.
Next up, the Sharks stay on the road with a doubleheader tomorrow at Morehead City. First pitch of game 1 is set for 6:05 against the Marlins and the Sharks Pregame Show begins at 5:50.
