LEOMINSTER, Mass. (Monday, July 15, 2013) For the first seven innings, there was a pitchers duel at Doyle Field on Monday night.
Wachusett Dirt Dawgs' Joey Gaouette (William & Mary) and Martha's Vineyard Sharks' Bob Carbaugh (Seton Hill) gave the fans a treat, combining to allow only ten hits and two runs as the Sharks defeated the Dirt Dawgs 10-1.
"Gaouette pitched well tonight," said Scott Lettre, Director of Baseball Operations for Wachusett. "We knew the Sharks were the top team in the league, and they showed it tonight, ending our five game winning streak.
Hopefully we can recover tomorrow and begin an even longer streak."
Carbaugh proved why he is considered one of the top pitchers in the FCBL, going seven innings while allowing no runs, three hits, and striking out seven.
With the win, Carbaugh remains undefeated, moving to 6-0 on the season.
Gaouette pitched a solid game for the Dirt Dawgs (13-16), going seven innings; he allowed two runs on seven hits, and struck out six.
Unfortunately, Gaouette received no run support and took the loss, moving to 1-1.
The Sharks (22-10) scored one run in both the fourth and sixth, and broke open the game in the eighth with six runs.
The Dirt Dawgs broke the shutout in the eighth thanks to Tyler Mikrut's (SEMO) solo homerun.
The Dirt Dawgs return to action tomorrow as they travel to Brockton to take on the Rox. First pitch is at 7:05 PM.
