Wilmington Sharks News Release

Strong pitching and season high 10 hits helped Wilmington (5-3) top Fayetteville (2-5) for the first time this summer. In the first two games between the Sharks and SwampDogs, Fayetteville had outscored Wilmington 17-8. Tonight though, the boys from the Port City had the upper hand in a 4- 3 victory.

Wilmington found the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second. Danny Wilson doubled to right center to lead off the frame. Then, Wilson advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home to score on a throwing error by Brennan Fontenot to plate the first run.

On the mound, Dylan Gibeau cruised through the first four innings for the Sharks. In the fifth though, the redshirt junior ran into some trouble. Gibeau allowed just one hit, but walked two and hit two batters to allow the SwampDogs to take a 2-1 lead.

The Sharks answered back in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Dan Wilson walked on seven pitches to chase starter Garret Rogers from the game. The next batter, Trent Alley, smashed a triple into the right center gap to score Wilson to tie the game back at two. Later in the inning, Alley came around to score on a wild pitch by Austin Goff (0-1) for a 3-2 advantage.

In the seventh, Wilmington added an insurance run. Paxton Wallace clobbered his first homer of the season to right field to put the Sharks on top 4-2.

In relief, Sam Luchansky (3-0) pitched three strong, scoreless innings to earn his third win of the summer. Keith Gabrielson (1) came in for his first save opportunity and allowed the run, but still earned the save in his one inning of work.

Tonight's uniforms are still available for auction until Sunday, June 10th at noon. The Sharks wore jerseys to honor the Port City Roosters and those game worn jerseys are being auctioned off to benefit the Wilmington Firefighters Association. Next up, the Sharks close a three game home stand tomorrow against the Edenton Steamers in a rematch of last summer's East Division Championship Series. First pitch is set for 7:05 tomorrow against the Steamers and the Sharks Pregame Show begins at 6:50.
