Sharks Announce Suspension of 2020 Summer Season

June 25, 2020 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Wilmington Sharks have suspended play for the 2020 season as a result of North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper's announcement on Wednesday, June 24 that the state's Safer At Home Phase 2 policy will continue for another three weeks. As part of the Safer At Home Phase 2 Executive Order, outdoor spectator events are limited to a maximum of 25 people.

The Sharks season was originally slated to begin May 28 and then was pushed back to a July 1 start. With the extension of Phase 2 to mid-July, it is no longer feasible for the Sharks to play this summer.

"The health and safety of the players, coaches, fans, employees, host families and team partners ended up driving our decision. We pursued several options to get on the field this season, but in the past 24 hours, those options evaporated due to impacts from the Coronavirus", stated Carson Bowen, Sharks General Manager.

Details regarding the 2021 season will be announced as they become available.
