Wilmington Sharks News Release
The Wilmington Sharks are excited to welcome three more players to the 2019 team. Jake Plastiak from Wichita State University, Steven Curry from Georgia Southern University, and Tucker Greer from Young Harris College. Both Plastiak and Curry were recommended to the Sharks by one of their good baseball friends. Plastiak was recommended by Shocker teammate and 2018 Sharks player Paxton Wallace and Curry was recommended by 2015 Sharks player Matt Meeder. Meeder played his college ball at Mercer University and graduated in 2017.
"I have heard a lot of great things about Wilmington," said Curry. "Matt told me how much he loved playing there."
Curry is currently a junior with the Eagles. In his first two seasons he combined to start in over 100 games. He has also spent a lot of time serving as the team's lead off hitter. He began his career hitting .312 as a freshman in 2017. He has raised his batting average to .354 so far this season including a home run, a triple, fifteen doubles, and 29 RBIs.
Plastiak was drafted in the 28th round of the 2018 draft out of Andrew High School in Tinley Park, Illinois. He chose to keep his commitment to Wichita State where he is currently in his freshman year. During his senior year at Andrew, he hit .430. He also hit seven home runs, put 40 footprints on home plate, and drove in 35 runs.
Greer transferred to Young Harris this season after spending two years at Lincoln Trail College. He hit .348 as a freshman with Lincoln Trail in 2017 and hit .357 as a sophomore in 2018. He hit .296 this season with the Young Harris and helped lead the Mountain Lions to the Peach Belt Conference Title and a birth in the Division II NCAA Tournament.
"After being picked to finish seventh in the conference, winning the tournament is a step towards letting everyone know we have earned respect as a quality program," said Greer. "Being able to play in the first regional Young Harris has been to is an honor."
The Mountain Lions ended up dropping their first game of the tournament to Catawba. They then defeated Newberry in an elimination game before falling again to Catawba, ending their postseason run.
