Wilmington Sharks News Release
Five players from three South Carolina schools are headed to Wilmington for the 2018 summer.
Representing Presbyterian College is catcher Michael Varga and left-handed pitcher Austin Paradis.
Infielder Mason Streater and southpaw Corey Stone join the Sharks from the University of South Carolina. Rounding out the new acquisitions for Wilmington is a third left-handed pitcher, Eddie Hiott from Charleston Southern University.
For the second straight year a catcher from Presbyterian is behind the plate for Wilmington. Michael Varga takes the place of Thatcher Coleman, who made his presence felt last summer with a couple of long home runs. Varga is a junior in his first season with the Blue Hose. This year he has made 12 starts and hit a home run for PC.
Joining Varga from Presbyterian College is left-hander Austin Paradis. The freshman from Charlotte, North Carolina has made an early impact in Clinton this season. Paradis has started four games and made appearances in eight others. The young southpaw has worked 25.2 innings on his way to a 1- 3 mark in his first season. His lone win of the season came on the road at South Carolina. The freshman worked two innings and a third, allowing just one run on four hits in a 7-4 win over the Gamecocks.
The first Gamecock making the trip from Columbia, South Carolina up to Wilmington this summer is freshman Mason Streater. The young infielder has been used sparingly in his first season for South Carolina. Streater has played in just seven games and has one hit in two plate appearances. His only hit of the season came in a 14-2 drubbing of Charleston Southern. Former Shark ace Daniel Johnson threw just two-thirds of an inning early in that contest.
Also heading north for the summer is left-handed pitcher Corey Stone from the University of South Carolina. The Prosperity, South Carolina native was drafted in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers in the 27th round. However, Stone decided to play for the Gamecocks instead. Before heading to Columbia, Corey Stone was the South Carolina 3A Player of the Year in 2017. He was named the number two prospect in the state after an 8-0 record with a 1.02 ERA and 88 strikeouts his senior season. Stone is still looking to break through for the Gamecocks though. He has thrown just two innings in three games, but has yet to allow a run in his college career.
The final acquisition for the Sharks is lefty Eddie Hiott from Charleston Southern. Hiott has big shoes to fill as his fellow Buccaneer, Daniel Johnson was outstanding for the Sharks last summer. Johnson went 5-2 in 9 starts last season, threw the second most innings and lead Wilmington with 64 strikeouts. So far this season, Hiott has put up solid numbers for CSU. A year removed from leading the team with the lowest batting average against, the junior has been superb out of the bullpen. In 23 appearances, Hiott is 3-2 and has stuck out 13 batters in 14 innings of work. His three wins are the most on the Bucs pitching staff and he also leads the team with his 23 appearances.
Opening Day is just 28 days away! Tickets all season long are available at wilmingtonsharks.com or by calling 910-343-5621.
