Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
The Vero Beach Dodgers took two out of three games against the Palm Beach Cardinals at Holman Stadium this week. Vero outscored the Cardinals 13-5 in the three games to improve their season record to 7-6. The Dodgers have won six of their last eight games since beginning the season 1-4. The series began with an impressive 7-0 win. Chuck Tiffany, Danny Muegge and Mike Rodriguez combined to shut out the Cards and Andy LaRoche went 4-4 at the plate. Tiffany picked up the win and has notched a victory in all three of his starts this year. He has struck out an amazing 26 batters in only 16 innings, while surrendering just eight hits. LaRoche supplied the offense, scoring three times and knocking his second home run of the season over the center field fence.
Game Two of the series proved unlucky for the Dodgers. Vero held a 3-1 lead for most of the game, thanks to a bases-clearing bases-loaded double by Tony Abreu. Julio Pimentel turned in his best start of the year, going six innings and allowing just one run while striking out seven Cardinals. But Matt Dryer, the Palm Beach cleanup hitter, smoked a 2-run homer to center to tie the score at three in the 8th Inning. A few batters later, Michael McCoy knocked home the go-ahead run and the Cardinals held on for a 4-3 victory.
Vero Beach got their revenge Wednesday night. Second-year VB Dodger Casey Hoorelbeke got the call for his first start of the season and he dealt five shutout innings to earn his first win. Pitching was again the story as Mark Alexander threw the final three innings (striking out five) to pick up his second save of the year. Andy LaRoche came through in the clutch for Vero. The Dodgers held a scant 2-1 lead in the seventh inning when LaRoche delivered a mammoth home run over the new scoreboard in left-center field to put the Dodgers up by four. Vero added a run in the 8th to seal a 6-1 win.
The Dodgers hit the road for three games in Daytona, but return home Sunday for a 1:00 PM game with the Jupiter Hammerheads.
