BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - It took 65 minutes and six shootout rounds to settle the Thanksgiving Day contest between the Binghamton Senators and the Albany River Rats, with Albany earning the extra point on two shootout markers to Binghamton's one in the 3-2 final.
Dwight Helminen put the River Rats on the scoreboard with a power-play tally, taking a cross-ice pass from Michael Ryan and snapping a wrist shot past the glove hand of netminder Jeff Glass.
Peter Regin responded two minutes later with his first AHL goal. Regin and Greg Mauldin advanced into the Albany zone along the right boards. Mauldin dump a pass to Regin, who worked left to the front of the crease and beat netminder Justin Peters on the blocker side.
The score was tied for just 36 seconds when Jakub Petruzalek followed his own shot and tapped home a rebound to make it 2-1 Albany.
The River Rats held the one-goal lead until Denis Hamel buried a power-play marker early in the third period. Hamel and Zack Smith both crashed the net following a Brian Lee shot from the point. Smith tapped the puck to his left where Hamel flipped a backhand shot past Peters to tie the game.
Neither team found the net in overtime forcing the shootout round. Ilya Zubov scored Binghamton's lone goal. Albany countered with markers from Helminen and Ryan to secure the extra point. Glass turned away 31 saves in the losing effort for Binghamton.
