Portland Pirates News Release
Lewiston, ME- The Binghamton Senators defeated the Portland Pirates by a score of Saturday night in a game that both teams combined for 12 fighting majors and 204 penalty minutes.
The Pirates finished with 134 penalty minutes, breaking their previous record of 119, set on Nov. 19, 1996 against the Fredericton Canadiens.
The Senators came out of the gates strong, pouring pressure on the Pirates and capitalizing with a goal at 2:27 by Chris Wideman. Exactly four minutes later at 6:27, Danny Hobbs gave Binghamton a 2-0 lead when he was able to beat Domingue with a one-timer from the middle.
The Pirates pushed back, scoring at 10:30 on the power play. After a scramble in front, the puck came to Brandon McMillan who fed Brandon Yip in front. Yip quickly stuffed the puck through Hammond's pads to cut the deficit to one. But the Senators responded quickly, with Jim O'Brien scoring at 14:42.
In the second the Senators extended their lead, scoring twice, less than two minutes apart. Corey Cowick was able to squeak the puck past Domingue before a brawl ensued. Brett Hextall and Kyle Hagel were each handed game misconducts, as was Senators forward Kramer, but Binghamton was given a power play. On the man-advantage, O'Brien beat Visentin, who replaced Domingue, to make it 5-1.
In the third, the Senators extended their lead again at 4:46 when Darian Dziurzynski's older brother, David, scored. Tempers flared more and two more fights broke out-first between James Melindy and Puempel, followed by Lucas Lessio and Prince. Mike Hoffman tallied a power play goal to make it 7-1 and frustrations boiled over as six more fights broke out in the final minute with Dziurzynski, Mark Louis and Phil Lane fighting for the Pirates and Cowick, Ben Blood and Daniel New for the Senators. Brandon Yip and Chris Wideman wrapped the penalties with misconducts as time expired. In all, there were 12 fighting majors and the two teams combined for 148 penalty minutes in the third period.
