EDINBURG, Texas - The McAllen Thunder used a six-run second inning to sneak past the Edinburg Roadrunners 6-5 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Wilmer Pino got the Roadrunners on the board in the bottom of the first with his third home run of the season making it 2-0.
The Thunder (14-27) responded with six runs in the top of the second against Edinburg (25-16) starter Ryan Smith. McAllen got RBI singles from Henry Abad, Craig Hertler, Brian Nichols and a two-run single from Yasser Gomez giving them the lead 6-2.
A sacrifice fly by Felix Molina in the bottom of the fourth allowed Carlos Hereaud, who started the inning with a single, to score cutting the Thunder lead in half 6-3.
Cristobal Santana led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and then came in to score on an RBI triple by Stantrel Smith. Vincent Blue then followed with an RBI double that allowed Smith to score making it 6-5 McAllen.
Chad Robinson closed out the ball game with a perfect ninth giving McAllen the 6-5 victory.
Ryan Smith (3-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, all in the second inning, on eight hits.
Alexei Perez (2-1) pitched seven and a third innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with five strike outs for his second win of the season.
The Roadrunners and Thunder will continue their series Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Dave Dinelli (1-4) is expected to face Alex Smith (0-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
