Colts Lose Second Straight to WhiteWings

Harlingen, Texas --- The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored six runs in the seventh inning, and cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Colts Thursday night at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings sent 11 men to the plate in the seventh, and catcher Mario Mercedes went 2-for-2 in the inning. Mercedes, designated hitter John Sciullo, first baseman Bryan Marquez, right fielder Francisco Santana, shortstop Leugim Barroso, and third baseman Leivi Ventura all scored.

Although Colts' reliever David Phillips came in to finish the seventh, all the runs were charged to starter Mark Willinsky. Willinsky (4-2) gave up eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

San Angelo scored its lone run in the sixth. Right fielder J.J. Sherrill had a leadoff infield single, and advanced to second on first baseman Daryl Jones's infield hit. Designated hitter Cory Patton followed with an RBI single up the middle that plated Sherrill. The run evened the score at one, the Colts were held scoreless the rest of the night.

WhiteWings starter Luis Chirinos (5-3) earned the win, striking out a game-high nine and allowing six hits in 6 2/3.

The win improves Rio Grande Valley to 22-18, while the loss drops San Angelo to 21-19. This series continues Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on KKSA beginning at 6:50 p.m.

The Colts' next home game is Saturday, July 14 when they host the McAllen Thunder at 7:05 p.m. It will be Glow-In-The-Dark Baseball Night, sponsored by AEP Texas. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will get a glow-in-the-dark Colts' baseball, courtesy of AEP Texas.

The Colts are a member of United League Baseball who are in their 13th season. Tickets are on sale now, and available at the Colts' front office at Foster Field.
