Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
JUPITER, F.L. (May 19, 2008) - In a game full of controversy at second base on Monday night, when all was said and done, the Jupiter Hammerheads doubled up the Fort Myers Miracle with a 4-2 win at Roger Dean Stadium. The Miracle see their brief two-game win streak come to an end only registering six hits on the night.
Jupiter used a couple of two run innings for their scoring Monday night beginning right off the bat in the first. Kevin Randel and Spike McDougall connected on two-out RBI-singles spotting the Hammerheads their two in the first. The first controversial play at second base went in favor of the Miracle in the top of the third.
With runners at the corners and one down, Whit Robbins rolled a groundball to second that appeared to be an inning-ending double play. James Guerrero fielded and flipped to shortstop Agustin Septimo covering the second base bag. Septimo's relay throw to first would hit Yangervis Solarte sliding in to break up the double play. Jupiter argued, to no avail, that Solarte intentionally interfered with Septimo's throw, which allowed Yancarlos Ortiz to score from first slicing the deficit to 2-1.
After one-out singles by Guerrero and Chris Dunn in the Jupiter fourth, a two-run double to right by Septimo would quickly put the Hammerheads up by three. In the midst of a potentially big inning for the Miracle in the seventh, controversy reared its ugly head again, this time going in favor of the Hammerheads.
Edward Ovalle tripled and scored on Danny Berg's RBI-single to center, before Berg was involved with the bad call at second base. As Berg slid into second trying to break up another double play, this time hit into by Rudy Palacios, Guerrero's throw from second clearly clipped off of Septimo's glove covering the bag which would have put runners at first and second with one out. Base umpire Jason Bertschy immediately ruled that Septimo lost the ball on the exchange from glove hand to throwing hand and that Berg was out on the play. After a lengthy argument by Miracle manager Jeff Smith, who remained in the game, the call stayed the same and Ortiz later grounded out to end the inning.
Game three of the four-game series at Roger Dean Stadium will fire off a half-hour earlier on Tuesday night beginning at 6:35 p.m. Southpaw Tyler Robertson (1-2, 3.53) gets the start against the Hammerheads RHP Jeff Allison (2-4, 2.47).
