Seattle Sounders FC Scores Four to Double up Red Bulls

SEATTLE - Sounders FC matched a team-record Thursday night, scoring four goals behind a Roger Levesque brace on the way to a 4-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.

Seattle (7-4-7, 28 points) extended its unbeaten streak to five matches and moved into a tie for second place in the Western Conference standings with FC Dallas.

New York (5-3-8, 23 points) remains at the top of the Eastern Conference standings but has won just one of its last nine matches.

After subbing in for Mike Fucito in the 58th minute, Levesque was able to score his first two goals of the season, regaining Seattle's lead and sealing the victory.

In the 67th minute, Levesque charged a Leo Gonzalez corner kick, lowering his head and flicking the ball from the near post past New York goalkeeper Greg Sutton to the far corner of the net. Levesque's second score came in the 78th minute when he took the ball off Sutton's feet at the top of the box and knocked it into the empty net.

New York had fought back from an early 2-nil deficit, equalizing in the 58th minute when Jan Gunnar Solli sent a cross in from the right side and Seattle defender Zach Scott inadvertently deflected it over Kasey Keller's head for an own-goal.

The Red Bulls' first goal came in the 31st minute when Dane Richards fired a shot from the right corner of the box and inside the far post, just brushing Keller's outstretched glove. Joel Lindpere assisted on the goal.

The Rave Green got off to a fast start, scoring the fastest two goals in club history, in addition to scoring the quickest back-to-back goals. In the 11th minute, Erik Friberg controlled a deflected corner at the top of the box and bent it around several defenders and into the right corner of the net for his first MLS goal.

Then in the 12th minute, Osvaldo Alonso cracked a left-footed half-volley from the top of the box that skipped off the turf and through New York's defense and into the net for his second goal of the season.

New York held the advantage in shots (13-10) but Seattle held the advantage in shots-on-goal (5-3).

The match attracted 46,065, setting a Sounders FC record for an MLS match. It was the largest crowd for a MLS regular season, stand-alone match since July 19, 2008 (L.A. Galaxy at New York Red Bulls - 46,754).

Gonzalez and Alonso each were issued their fifth yellow cards of the season, resulting in one-game suspensions.

Sounders FC next remain at home to face the New England Revolution on Sunday, June 26, on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field. The match will be televised on KONG TV 6/16 and kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. PT.
