Season Update: Silver Knights Ready for the Road

December 8, 2016 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

The Silver Knights opened the season with three straight matches on the friendly turf of Dave and Buster's Field. While the season started strong with a second-half comeback win against the Harrisburg Heat, the Silver Knights then fell by a single goal in consecutive home losses to Florida and Cedar Rapids.

The team is hungry to get back on track as it starts a three-game road trip Saturday at 7:30 p.m. versus Harrisburg. Syracuse will then travel to the Midwest, taking on the Milwaukee Wave and Chicago Mustangs on Dec. 17 and 18. It's a chance for the Knights to move up in the MASL standings in their drive to bring playoff soccer back to Syracuse.

Three Positives

1. Silver Knights fans had a lot to cheer about in the opening trio of games. The opener featured a fine performance from goalkeeper Andrew Coughlin. In fact, the defense is second only to defending champion Baltimore in goals allowed per game in the Eastern Division. All of the matches were close, with the outcome unknown until deep into the fourth quarter.

2. The match against Florida gave fans a chance to see Moises Gonzalez shine. Gonzalez scored two goals and added an assist against the Tropics, picking up where he left off as a high-scoring forward for Brownsville last season. His goal off a set-piece rocketed in the the back of the net, and it's clear that he's a danger in the final third with the ball at his feet.

3) The club was also heartened by the return of team MVP and club Defensive Player of the Year, Darren Toby, who rejoined the team after missing the first game against Harrisburg. Look for Toby to have a greater influence on matches as the season progresses.
