Mississippi Braves News Release
CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Chattanooga Lookouts (47-38, 7-6) scored seven runs in the first inning and three in the second inning to run away with a 12-5 victory over the Mississippi Braves (39-41, 6-6) on Friday night at AT&T Field.
Cody Milligan returned to the M-Braves lineup and didn't disappoint in his first action since April 22. The 24-year-old finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. The M-Braves offense pounded out 11 hits, including a season-most eight doubles.
M-Braves starter Alan Rangel (L, 1-9) struggled out of the gate and surrendered seven first inning runs over just 0.2 innings. The bottom of the first began with a throwing error by Cade Bunnell and included two of the four Mississippi errors. Overall Rangel gave up five earned runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in his 48th M-Braves start.
The Lookouts extended their lead to 10-0 with a three-run second inning. Hayden Deal relieved Rangel in the first inning and got the final out but ceded three runs (two earned) in the second inning. Chattanooga's Jose Torres had four RBI in the first two innings, driving in a pair on a single in the first and their lone extra-base hit, a double in the second. The Lookouts pounded out 18 hits with 17 singles.
Mississippi cracked the scoreboard for the first time in the third inning on an RBI double by Cade Bunnell that scored Milligan. A Milligan sacrifice fly in the fifth inning made it 10-2. The M-Braves ran Lookouts starter Sam Benschoter (W, 3-6) from the game in the sixth inning and cut the lead in half. Landon Stephens launched a double high up off the centerfield wall, driving home Jesse Franklin V, and then two batters later, Milligan plated a pair with his second two-bagger.
Ty Tice and Trey Riley each added two scoreless innings of relief, while Alec Barger tossed one scoreless inning.
Bunnell finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, while Justin Dean was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Stephens was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI and has hit safely in nine of his last ten games. Luke Waddell was on base three times, going 1-for-3 with a double and two walks. For Milligan, he has hit safely in 12 of his 14 games played this season.
The M-Braves and Lookouts will continue their three-game series on Saturday night at AT&T Field.
