Mohegan Wolves News Release
Albany, NY (July 27th, 2002)- Saturday night in Albany was a microcosm of the 2002 campaign for the Mohegan Wolves, as virtually nothing went the Wolves way. As was the case on opening night, April 5th, the Northeast Divisional Champion Albany Conquest (13-3) again defeated Mohegan 57-27.
The first quarter was the Wolves downfall. An onside kick to start the game by Shawn Maclean was recovered by the Wolves and then nullified by an off sides penalty. With the element of surprise gone Mohegan was forced to kick it deep. Albany would then drive and score. The Wolves first possession ended in a missed 33-yard field goal. Albany would again drive and score. Mohegan's second possession ended when Lou Vega sacked Kevin Carty forcing a fumble, which Vega recovered. Albany again, drove and scored. On the ensuing kickoff, Brandon Burnside took one small step out of the end zone, and then was tackled back in the end zone for a safety. The 1st quarter would end with the Conquest on top 23-0.
The Wolves battled with Albany the rest of the way, adding 13 points in the 2nd quarter on a Greg Gildea 29 yard TD reception and a Kevin Carty 1 yard plunge. Carl Wisnieski punched in a 1-yard touchdown in the 3rd and Brent Burnside caught the last score of the 2002 season for the Wolves when he hooked with Carty from 6 yards out.
Albany swept the season series, as well as the night's awards. Corey Hill earned Game MVP honors by catching a record breaking 18 passes for 183 yards and 5 touchdowns. His 18 receptions break's the af2's single game reception total; it also gives Corey 161 receptions on the year, setting a new single season reception total for all of professional football. Mike Guazzo was named Ironman of the Game while Brandon Tinson and Alex Houston shared ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors. With the victory the Conquest posted a 13-3 record, a new best for an expansion team in its first season.
For the Wolves Brandon Burnside grabbed 5 passes for 51 yards. Kevin Carty passed for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns on the night. Brent Burnside had an interception, 2 tackles, 3 receptions for 18 yards and a touchdown.
Mohegan finishes their inaugural season with a 3-13 record, 2-10 in the tough Northeast Division.
