Arkansas Twisters (11-5) 61, Bossier City Battle Wings (9-7) 51
BOSSIER CITY, La. â In a thrilling atmosphere with 5,432 fans, the Arkansas Twisters defeated the Battle Wings, 61-51, to advance to the arenafootball2 playoffs for the first time in team history.
Arkansas opened the scoring 2:30 into the game with RICKY HEBERT connecting with ANTHONY EUBANKS for a 39-yard strike. The Twisters enjoyed the lead for the rest of the first half, but Bossier City remained close behind. LARRY NIXON caught two touchdown passes and SCOTT TYNER added a 42-yard field goal at the horn to pull the Battle Wings to within 33-23 at the half.
Bossier City claimed its first lead at 44-41 on a fourth-down pass from SHERARD POTEETE to KEVIN STEVENSON with seven minutes left in the game. However, KEVIN WILLIAMS made a diving catch for a 28-yard touchdown to put Arkansas ahead for good at the 4:25 mark, then DARNELL SMALL rumbled 18 yards for a TD with 46 seconds remaining. Bossier City tried to pull off the last-minute comeback, with Poteete hitting PAT HOUSE with a six-yard touchdown pass, but Williams returned the ensuing onside kick 14 yards for the clinching score.
MVP Hebert led the way for the Twisters with a 249-yard passing performance, going 15-for-28 with five passing touchdowns and one rushing TD. His 85 passing touchdowns on the year left him one short of MATT SAUK's single-season record, set last year with Tennessee Valley. Poteete completed 28-of-36 passes for 327 yards â his second highest total of the season. Stevenson led all Battle Wings receivers with 129 yards and three touchdowns.
Bossier's VAL MORRIS was voted the Ironman of the Game with 36 yards receiving and an interception on defense. Robinson claimed ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors with 8.5 tackles and an interception.

Cape Fear Wildcats (13-3) 67, Charleston Swamp Foxes (7-9) 28
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. â MATT LEFEVER and BOB PESAVENTO filled in for the injured MIKE GLUSKI and led the Wildcats to a 67-28 victory over Charleston in front of 5,731 fans at the North Charleston Coliseum. The victory, coupled with Richmond's loss at Carolina, gave Cape Fear the Atlantic Division championship.
Four unanswered touchdowns in the first half helped Cape Fear turn a 7-6 deficit into a 33-14 halftime lead. LeFever found MATT BURNSTEIN in the end zone to start the run, then JEFF HIGGINS added a five-yard rush before WILMONT PERRY ran for two more TDs. MIKE BATH rushed 20 yards for a score with 4:14 left in the second quarter in response for Charleston.
BEN CHRISTOPHER scored for Charleston to open the scoring in the second half, but two Pesavento touchdown passes extended the lead to 47-21. After BILLY COOK's 56-yard kickoff return for a score, the Wildcats' defense took control. Charleston was held at bay for the remainder of the game, as Cape Fear added three more scores in the fourth.
DWAYNE WILMOT led the Swamp Foxes with five receptions for 35 yards. Christopher caught four passes for 49 yards and a touchdown in addition to his rushing score. Bath was 12-of-26 for 117 yards with both a passing and rushing touchdown. Cape Fear was led by game MVP Lefever. He completed 7-of-10 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Pesavento was 9-of-13 for 134 yards and a pair of scores in his first action with the Wildcats.
Perry rushed eight times for 42 yards and three scores, also blocking and recovering a long field goal attempt for a touchdown to earn Ironman of the Game honors. Teammate VONCELLIES ALLEN earned the ADT Defensive Player of the Game by recording 2.5 tackles and half a sack. He also batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage.

Columbus Wardogs (4-12) 54, Mobile Wizards (0-16) 33
COLUMBUS, Ga. â Columbus quarterbacks BILLY LUCKIE and JEFF WELSH combined for 269 yards passing and six touchdowns to lead the Wardogs to the 50-point mark for the third time this season as they upended the Mobile Wizards 54-33 Saturday night before 6,408 fans.
Wizards trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and twice would cut the lead to seven in the second quarter, including once on a MATT BUTLER interception return for a touchdown with 34 seconds left in the half. However, the Mobile defense surrendered a touchdown after a two-play Columbus drive, when Luckie hit PHIL TAYLOR on a 30-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds remaining to boost the Wardogs' halftime lead to 28-14.
In the third quarter, the two teams exchanged scores, but in the fourth, Columbus further extended its lead as Welsh tossed two consecutive touchdown passes to open the period. A CHAD HOLLEMAN field goal sandwiched between Mobile scores gave the Wardogs a 48-27 lead with 44 seconds to play.
Taylor was named game MVP for his nine receptions, 121 yards and three touchdowns. CLIFTON ROBINSON added six receptions for 74 yards and one touchdown. SAHMARI BUCHANNAN had six receptions for 64 yards and two touchdowns and was named the game's Ironman, adding 3.5 tackles on defense. The defense was lead by KOFI SMITH who made 4.5 tackles and had two interceptions.
Mobile's KELVIN ROBINSON was 15-of-33 with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He was sacked five times, including twice by DERRICK BYRD. The Wizards were led on defense by T.J. PERRY, who recorded 6.5 tackles.

Birmingham Steeldogs (11-5) 77, Louisville Fire (2-14) 34
LOUISVILLE, Ky. â Punctuated by a 28-point third-quarter effort, the Birmingham Steeldogs defeated Louisville 77-34 in front of 10,464 fans at Freedom Hall Saturday.
ANTHONY SHELMAN brought the crowd to its feet on the opening kickoff, returning the ball 57 yards for a Fire touchdown. Shelman had three carries for eight yards and four kick returns for a total of 127 yards. The Steeldogs quieted the crowd three minutes later, as JOHNNY ANDERSON hauled in a nine-yard pass from MONTRESSA KIRBY. Birmingham scored again less than three minutes later when WILLIAM MAYES fell on a LEROY FREDERICK fumble in the Louisville end zone.
The Steeldogs pulled away in the final minute of the first half when Bell scored on a 22-yard pass from Kirby with 41 seconds left. Just 20 seconds later, CHRIS EGGLESTON recovered a Hicks fumble at the Louisville two-yard line. That set up Kirby, who called his own number on a three-yard bootleg rush to put Birmingham up 49-22.
Birmingham's 28-point third quarter was highlighted by two interceptions returned for touchdowns that put the game beyond reach. MICHAEL FEAGIN returned the first of back-to-back interceptions 48 yards to paydirt, and ELDRICK HILL returned the second 43 yards for a score with 37 seconds left in the period.
Kirby was the game MVP, racking up 234 yards passing and six touchdowns. Kirby added two scores on the ground. Feagin's 48-yard interception return and 7.5 tackles earned him ADT Defensive Player of the Game. MIKE LEAKS earned Ironman recognition for Louisville. Leaks had four tackles on defense and 29 yards receiving and a touchdown on offense.

New Haven Ninjas (6-10) 54, Rochester Brigade (7-9) 50
NEW HAVEN, Conn. â TERRANCE QUATTLEBAUM pulled in a 32-yard touchdown pass with 49 seconds remaining, and New Haven's defense stopped two last-minute drives by the Rochester Brigade to give the Ninjas a 54-50 victory before 4,588 fans.
Rochester scored twice late in the fourth quarter to take a 50-47 lead. The team's second touchdown, a 23-yard fumble return by game Ironman VONKEITH SPENCER, came with just one minute remaining. Following Quattlebaum's score, the New Haven defense shut down Rochester, as ANTHONY COMER batted away a pass on fourth down. The Brigade regained the ball with one tick left after CHRIS BODEN fumbled on a quarterback keeper attempting to run out the clock, but Comer again deflected an end zone pass.
On the opening kickoff, Spencer wormed free of numerous tackles in the end zone, escaping all the way for a touchdown. New Haven fought back with a pair of touchdown receptions by KAZMEL MINOTT. The second came after ALLISTAIR SEBASTIEN intercepted his third pass of the season on the one-yard line. Sebastien recorded two picks to earn ADT Defensive Player of the Game accolades.
MARTINO THEUS finished the game with 11 catches for 140 yards and two scores. Quattlebaum garnered MVP honors after setting team records with 13 receptions and 155 yards. He ended the game with four touchdowns. Boden completed 31-of-46 passes for a team-record 333 yards and six scores to pace the Ninjas.

Jacksonville Tomcats (7-9) 64, Tallahassee Thunder (9-7) 61
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. â The Jacksonville Tomcats redeemed an earlier loss to the Tallahassee Thunder with a 64-61 win Saturday night in front of 3,052 fans at the Leon County Civic Center. Despite the loss, Tallahassee won the American Conference Southern Division title due to the Florida Firecats' loss to the Pensacola Barracudas.
With less than five minutes remaining, Tallahassee led 61-52, but JOHN WELSH pulled the Tomcats back within three at the 3:19 mark with a 20-yard strike to ZACHAEUS WOODS. On the Thunder's next possession, CHRIS ANDERSON picked off VIC PENN, putting the ball back in Welsh's hands. On the second play of the drive, Welsh found Anderson for an eight-yard score to put the Tomcats ahead 64-61 with 56 seconds remaining. Tallahassee had a shot to win, but Penn threw four consecutive incomplete passes to turn over the ball on downs.
JAMES ADDERLY gave the Tomcats a 34-25 halftime lead with an eight-yard pass to Anderson. CAINON LAMB scored the first Tallahassee points of the game in the first quarter and added five more touchdowns in the second half to lead all receivers. Lamb finished with eight receptions for 212 yards, five receiving touchdowns and one rushing score.
Game MVP Welsh led Jacksonville with a team-record nine touchdowns and 256 yards. LAWRENCE PULLEN recorded seven receptions for 98 yards and three touchdowns. The Thunder's MESIAH PORTER rushed for a touchdown, extending his rushing touchdown streak to 12 and being named Ironman of the game. KEVIN CLEVELAND picked up ADT Defensive Player of the Game recognition after recording seven tackles, a forced fumble and an interception.

Albany Conquest (13-3) 57, Mohegan Wolves (3-13) 27
ALBANY, N.Y. â The Northeast Division champion Albany Conquest concluded its inaugural regular season Saturday night with a 57-27 victory over Mohegan in front of 6,953 at Pepsi Arena. Conquest OS COREY HILL finished the night with an af2-record 18 receptions for 183 yards and five touchdowns. Hill's 18 receptions gives him a total of 161 for the season, breaking the all-time professional football reception record of 160 held by DERRELL MITCHELL, who accomplished the feat for the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL in 1998.
The Conquest scored early and often as it took a 29-0 lead when JOHN KRUGER fell on a fumbled kick return with 7:38 left in the second quarter. RYAN VENA hooked up with three different receivers during that span, including a six-yard strike to Hill and a 21-yard score to Ironman of the Game MIKE GUAZZO.
After KEVIN CARTY pulled Mohegan within 29-13 by hitting GREG GILDEA on a 29-yard TD strike and then rushing for a score, Hill and Vena connected on a 32-yard touchdown with no time remaining in the half, giving the Conquest a 35-13 halftime lead.
The Conquest scored 16 unanswered points to open the second half, taking their largest lead of the night at 50-13. Mohegan trimmed the lead to 50-27 before Hill caught his record-setting pass for a 14-yard score with 13 seconds remaining in the game.
BRANSON TINSON had a team high 5.5 tackles, two interceptions, three pass deflections and a forced fumble. Meanwhile, ALEX HOUSTON recorded four tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Both players were honored as ADT Defensive Players of the Game.
Mohegan's BRANDON BURNSIDE finished the game with a team-high five receptions for 51 yards while his twin brother BRENT had three catches for 18 yards and a score. Carty completed 18-of-31 for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

Augusta Stallions (13-3) 60, Norfolk Nighthawks (8-8) 45
AUGUSTA, Ga. â The Augusta Stallions blanked the Norfolk Nighthawks 20-0 in the fourth quarter on their way to a 60-45 victory Saturday night in front of 4,535 fans at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
After trailing by eight points at halftime, the Nighthawks grabbed a 45-40 lead in the third quarter with 13 unanswered points. Augusta's GLEN GAUNTT scampered in from one-yard out early in the fourth to put Augusta back up for good.
The Stallions' BEN BRONSON led all receivers with eight catches for 144 yards and two scores and was named the game's MVP. Teammate CHRIS JOHNSON nabbed Ironman honors as he caught two balls for 10 yards and one score. He also had three tackles and one interception. GLEN MITTS tallied 2.5 tackles and 1.5 sacks to earn ADT Defensive Player of the Game recognition.
Gauntt completed 16-of-24 passes for 232 yards and four TDs while JEROME WEAKS went 13-for-33 passing, totaling 197 yards and four scores for the Nighthawks. ANTHONY STRINGFIELD led the Nighthawks' receiving corps with four grabs for 86 yards and two scores. JOHN CRATIC and GARY McCHALICHER also recorded sacks for the Stallions.

Carolina Rhinos (5-11) 63, Richmond Speed (12-4) 59
GREENVILLE, S.C. â CALEB SLOVER's one-yard touchdown plunge with one minute remaining in the fourth quarter propelled the Carolina Rhinos to a 63-59 win over the playoff-bound Richmond Speed Saturday night before 5,380 fans at the BI-LO Center. The Rhinos' win combined with a Cape Fear win over Charleston, ended Richmond's hopes of an Atlantic Division title.
The teams traded scores nine times, with Richmond scoring first and the Rhinos answering each time. On the ninth occasion, Richmond kicked a field goal with 2:20 remaining in the game, but attempted an unsuccessful onside kick to give the Rhinos the ball on the Speed 10-yard line and set up the winning score.
NICK JOHNSON of the Rhinos took MVP honors in the game with six catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns, as well as three kick returns for 61 yards. Teammate ARKEE THOMPSON was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with 2.5 tackles, two interceptions and four pass breakups, including a pair in the game's closing moments as Carolina held off Richmond.
Richmond's KEVIN HARVEY was named the game's Ironman, recording six rushes for 52 yards and 11 catches for 113 yards and a score. He also totaled 32 yards on two kick returns and nabbed an interception on defense. RAMONE ROBINSON rotated with Slover at quarterback for the Rhinos and led the team with five rushes for 13 yards and one TD along with 12 completions for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Slover had two carries for four yards and the game-winning touchdown plus seven completions for 130 yards and three touchdowns. BOB BEES completed 20 passes for 272 yards and six touchdowns for the Speed.

Pensacola Barracudas (8-8) 58, Florida Firecats (9-7) 44
PENSACOLA, Fla. â Pensacola defeated Florida 58-44 on Saturday night in front of 2,937 fans at the Pensacola Civic Center. Florida would have claimed the American Conference Southern Division championship with a victory.
Pensacola enjoyed a 33-21 halftime lead, but Florida quickly cut into the deficit on BRANDON KORNBLUE's field goal and an ANTHONY DIXON interception return for a score to make it 33-30. On the ensuing possession, Barracudas QB CHARLIE PETERSON was picked off once again, but Florida was unable to capitalize as JACK WALKER intercepted QB BRYAN SPARACINO in the end zone.
Walker then took up his role on offense, catching a touchdown to boost Pensacola's lead to 39-30. Turnovers plagued Florida once again as Sparacino fumbled at the Pensacola five-yard line and the Barracudas recovered. The hosts scored on every remaining drive as they maintained their advantage. WILL PETTIS caught his fourth and final touchdown of the game late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Quad City Steamwheelers (10-6) 58, San Diego Riptide (7-9) 41
MOLINE, Ill. â The Quad City Steamwheelers scored three times in the third quarter to turn a tied game into a 41-27 lead en route to a 58-41 victory over the San Diego Riptide before 6,810 fans at The Mark of the Quad Cities.
The Steamwheelers took control of the game in the third quarter, scoring three times. A 20-yard RICO CURTIS touchdown reception was sandwiched between two HIAWATHA PHIFER scoring strikes, then Quad City further added to the lead on a eight-yard pass from MIKE CAWLEY to CHRIS ANTHONY with 38 seconds left in the period. The Steamwheelers extended their advantage in the fourth quarter on a 45-yard TD pass from Cawley to JEFF HEWITT, who also returned a kickoff 57 yards for the final Quad City score.
The Steamwheelers' Anthony caught three touchdown passes, had one interception and batted down five passes to earn both Game MVP and Ironman honors. Anthony finished the night with eight catches for 113 yards to move into second place on the Steamwheelers' all-time receiving yards list with 1,613. Cawley completed 22-of-39 for 295 yards and six touchdowns, without an interception. TIM McGILL had two sacks for 14 yards and blocked a field goal attempt to earn the ADT Defensive Player of the Game.
San Diego QB KANE CLAUNCH was 11-of-24 on the night for 178 yards and four touchdowns. AAZAAR ABDUL-RAHIM led the Riptide receiving corps with five catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns.

Peoria Pirates (11-5) 71, Memphis Xplorers (5-11) 26
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. â Game MVP MATT PIKE completed 25-of-33 passes for 255 yards and six touchdowns as the Peoria Pirates dismantled Memphis 71-26 in front of 2,712 fans at the DeSoto Civic Center Saturday.
Two CORNELL CRAIG touchdown receptions broke an early 12-12 tie and staked the Pirates to a 13-point lead. With the game still in the balance, Charles Sheffield intercepted a Tim Lester pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, putting Peoria ahead 32-12. The Pirates scored the only points of the third quarter on a two-yard run by BRYAN ARCHIBALD, but that gave them a 46-20 advantage and kicked off a 19-point run that included a nine-yard TD pass from Pike to JERMAINE SHEFFIELD and a 13-yarder from WALTER CHURCH to BRANDON CAMPBELL.
Peoria DS/KR LINCOLN DUPREE tied a af2 record late in the game by returning an onside kick attempt 10 yards for a touchdown. It was his eighth return TD of the season, matching Tallahassee's LAWRENCE PULLEN (this season) and Louisville's ADLAI TRONE (2000). Craig was the Pirates' leading receiver, catching eight passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Peoria's DONTE GAMBLE was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game, snaring two interceptions and recovering a fumble in the end zone late in the game for a touchdown. Xplorers WR/DB CARLOS McNEARY was named the Ironman of the Game, catching eight passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Lester finished 16-of-33 for 202 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Macon Knights (13-3) 58, Tennessee Valley Vipers (13-3) 48
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. â The Macon Knights clinched the Eastern Division title and earned homefield advantage throughout the American Conference side of the playoff bracket with a 58-48 victory at Tennessee Valley in front of 5,197 fans at the Von Braun Center. The loss spoiled the Vipers' bid to secure homefield throughout the playoffs.
The Knights jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a pair of JOHN RAYBORN-to-JAQUEZ RUMPH touchdown passes of seven and four yards. The teams exchanged scores after Macon's early push, with Tennessee Valley battling back within 28-22 on JERMAINE ALFRED's 43-yard pass to RODNEY BROWN. But Macon scored the last touchdown of the first half and the first TD of the second half on Rayborn passes to GABE AMEY (24 yards) and Rumph (16 yards). With 11:34 left in the third quarter, Macon held a commanding 41-22 advantage and was never threatened after that, leading by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter.
Rayborn, who completed 31-of-40 attempts for 294 yards and seven touchdowns, was named MVP of the Game. Amey caught seven passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a tackle and two blocked passes on defense to be named Ironman of the Game. DENARIO SMALLS of Macon was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game with eight tackles, one fumble recovery and two interceptions. Turnovers severely damaged the Vipers, including three interceptions by Alfred and one lost fumble. Alfred completed 21-of-38 passes for 279 yards and six touchdowns. KELLY FIELDS led the Vipers' receiving corps with 85 yards on five catches.

Tulsa Talons (14-2) 57, Bakersfield Blitz (9-7) 50
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. â The Tulsa Talons secured the league's best record and homefield advantage throughout the ArenaCup playoffs with a 57-50 victory over the Bakersfield Blitz in front of 5,538 fans at the Centennial Garden.
The regular season finale matched two division champions and the league's top two teams in turnover margin â Bakersfield No. 1 (+23), Tulsa No. 2 (+18). But a turnover helped decide the game. With the Blitz trailing 50-43 and in possession of the ball with 1:10 remaining, a fumbled center-to-quarterback exchange gave Tulsa the ball on Bakersfield's 11-yard line. It was the only turnover in the game. Two plays later, Talons' quarterback and game MVP ANTHONY BUICH dove across the goal line on a one-yard, game-winning touchdown run to put Tulsa up 57-43 with 38 seconds remaining.
The Blitz answered on a one-yard touchdown run of its own by STEVE WOFFORD, but it came with only three seconds left. Bakersfield tried an onside kick, but Tulsa's LARRY HOLLINQUEST sealed the win for the Talons when he fell on the ball at the Blitz 11-yard line.
The Blitz led 27-25 at halftime, highlighted by a team record-long touchdown pass of 47 yards from CHAD ELLIOTT to TEDDY WILSON. Tulsa took the lead for good, 33-27, on the opening possession of the second half when JOHNNY BALOUS scored on a three-yard run. A 21-yard field goal by Bakersfield's JON BAKER cut the Talons lead to three at 33-30, but less than a minute later, Buich found a wide-open HENRY STEPHENS in the end zone to extend the lead to 10 points at 40-30. That was the biggest lead of the night for either team.
Allner, who caught three touchdown passes, ends the season as af2's scoring champion with 266 points scored and 42 touchdowns (35 receiving, six on kick returns and one rushing). His 266 points are the third-most in af2 history. For the night, Buich completed 23 of-30 attempts for 226 yards and six touchdowns. Bakersfield's Elliott completed 26-of-37 passes for 255 yards and five touchdowns. Sloth led the Blitz in receiving, hauling in 10 receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. Wilson finished with six catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Wofford hauled in seven catches for 36 yards and a touchdown through the air to add to his rushing touchdown. He also returned a kick 56 yards for a score, his second kick return TD this season.

Hawaiian Islanders (5-11) 46, Fresno Frenzy (4-12) 36
FRESNO, Calif. â The Hawaiian Islanders earned their first road win of the year with a 46-36 victory over Fresno, winning the season series over their fellow expansion team 2-1.
A season-high 5,896 fans at Selland Arena witnessed a seesaw game, with Hawaii holding a slim 31-28 advantage midway through the third quarter. But a pair of DARNELL ARCENEAUX touchdown strikes to NIAN TAYLOR (12 and 19 yards) staked the Islanders to a 15-point lead, their largest of the evening, with 13:45 left in the game. Frenzy QB KENNY ROSE hit WR/DB RON ATKINS with a 35-yard touchdown pass to narrow the deficit to 43-36 with 11:41 remaining, but KIMO NAEHU's 26-yard field goal provided the Islanders with their winning 10-point margin.
Arceneaux, who was named the game's most valuable player, completed 18-of-30 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns. Arceneaux also rushed for a TD to increase his af2 league-leading touchdown total to 26. Taylor ended the game with five catches for 78 yards. Rose completed 13-of-29 attempts for 169 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions. Fresno WR/DB ERIC MAHANKE caught five passes for 58 yards and recorded four tackles on defense to earn Ironman of the Game honors. Frenzy WR/DB DARNELL LACY was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game, logging 6.5 tackles.

The team is to be operated by CASEY WASSERMAN, owner and chief executive officer of the Arena Football League's Los Angeles Avengers.
