Evansville IceMen News Release
Evansville, Indiana - Orthopaedic Associates announced today that Sean Berberich has been hired as a Certified Athletic Trainer and will work with the Evansville Icemen as the trainer for the team's
professional athletes. This is the first time that Orthopaedic Associates will supply the athletic training to the professional hockey team. Orthopaedic Associates has been the official team physicians with an on-site presence at every home game since 2012.
Sean Berberich comes to Orthopaedic Associates from Clinton, South Carolina where he worked at Presbyterian College with the men's soccer team and men's baseball teams. He has also worked with the Washington Capitals (NHL) and the Charlotte Checkers (AHL). His experience in professional hockey made him appealing both to Orthopaedic Associates and the Evansville Icemen.
"Working with Orthopaedic Associates on this partnership will greatly improve the care we can supply to our athletes and hopefully reduce the number of injuries," said Jim Riggs, Chief Operating Officer of the Evansville Icemen. "With a continuation of care that connects our OA team physicians with our OA team trainers, our athletes will be under consistent care and expert medical guidance."
Sean was previously awarded the Citizen Leader Athletic Training student award during his time at Longwood University. He graduated in 2013 with his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and will graduate with his master's degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion with a specialty in Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention in 2016.
"I'm very excited to return to working with ice hockey, especially with a forward moving franchise like the Icemen," said Berberich. "OA and the whole sports medicine team seems like a great group of
professionals and I'm looking forward to being a part of the Evansville community."
The Evansville Icemen open their 2015-2016 season on Saturday, October 17th at the Ford Center against the Indy Fuel at 7:15 p.m.
"We're very proud of the relationship with the Icemen," said Jerry Blanton, Executive Director at Orthopaedic Associates. "Sean's new role will allow the care we provide as team physicians to continue
as players recover and learn to prevent new injuries. More time on the ice is better for the IceMen and means a better season for all the fans in our community."
As an Athletic Trainer at Orthopaedic Associates Berberich will work primarily with sports medicine physicians and patients wishing to return to activity. During the hockey off season he will work as a liaison to high school and collegiate student athletes and with youth hockey leagues.
