Seals Fall in Overtime
April 9, 2022 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
San Diego Seals News Release
The San Diego Seals fell to the Philadelphia Wings in overtime on Friday night at Pechanga Arena. The Seals closed a two-goal gap with 36 seconds left on the clock on back-to-back goals from forward Zack Greer, but ultimately fell in the extra frame.
"Obviously not the result we wanted," said General Manager and Head Coach Patrick Merrill. "We had a good start offensively, a bad second quarter and just couldn't get it done in overtime. I'm proud of our guys for inching back in the fourth, but ultimately couldn't get the job done."
A hot start in San Diego, the Seals led 6-2 after the first quarter of play. The Wings stormed back in the second to tie things up and take the lead into the locker room at half. A back-and-forth second half from both sides knotted the game in the final seconds with Philadelphia earning the victory in the first possession of overtime.
"Zack is such a big game player," continued Merrill. "He was clutch all game, especially those last two goals. Sucks we couldn't finish the job after we got so close. Our offense was moving the ball better and that's encouraging."
Forward Zack Greer led the Seals offense with three goals and seven points on the night, including the game-tying goal. Forward Austin Staats netted three goals, while forward Wesley Berg added five assists. The Seals power-play connected on 66% of their chances.
"We have a big opportunity tomorrow night," concluded Merrill. "Luckily, we get to turn the page quick and get back it. We'll get some rest, regroup and get ready for Colorado."
The Seals head to Colorado to face the Mammoth on Saturday night at Ball Arena. With a win, San Diego can clinch a playoff spot in the 2022 NLL Chase For The Championship. The game will be available on ESPN+.
