LAST WEEK:
TUE Jan. 3 Columbus @ SEALS (5-4 OT loss) 7:35 p.m. Silver Spurs Arena
The Seals looked good early only to blow a third period lead and fall 5-4 in overtime to the Columbus Cottonmouths. The New Year started out well for the Seals, an unlikely candidate scored a first period hat trick. The league's top enforcer, Andrew Katzberg netted his first career hat trick scoring all three goals in the opening frame. It was the third time this year a Seals player registered a hat trick.
The Seals had trouble the rest of the night getting back on the board. After a shaky first period Snakes goalie, Ryan Senft stopped 24 of the last 25 shots that came his way.
Columbus mounted a big comeback in the third period. The Cottonmouths went into the final 20 minutes down two goals, but tied it up just past the halfway point. Tim Green finished his two-goal night when, for the second straight game, he fired a snap shot to the back of the net. With 9:50 showing on the clock, Ryan Haggarty netted his fifth goal of the season and gave Columbus their first tie of the night.
As the game went to overtime neither team could have been happy. Florida and Columbus were a combined 2-7 in extra sessions this season. As always fans were treated to fast paced, up and down action and it started to look like a shootout would determine the game Tuesday night. Instead, Lorne Misita took a great two-line pass from Tylor Keller and beat Morgan Smietana for the game winner.
THU Jan. 5 SEALS @ Columbus (7-2 loss) 7:30 p.m. Columbus Civic Center
The Seals once again found out why Columbus is the hottest team in the Southern Professional Hockey League. In the final game of the three game set, the Snakes beat the Seals 7-2 to earn the sweep.
Tom McMonagle was the story as he began to write it early. Just 15 seconds into the contest, the Columbus Assistant Captain scored his 15th goal of the season. The Seals responded firing shots on goalie Ryan Senft, trying to get the goose egg off the scoreboard. Like the last two games, Senft stood on his head for the most part.
McMonagle finished his pure hat trick near the middle of the first period. His second goal of the night came at the 11:04 mark from a Tim Green pass. He finished the pure hat trick on a rebound power play goal sending the Cottonmouths to the locker room with a 3-0 first period lead.
The Seals came to life early in the second period cutting the deficit to one. Art Mnatsakanov, playing forward for the second time this season, lit the lamp for the fourth time this season. Only two minutes later Lawne Snyder fired a slap shot from the point on the power play to get the Seals back in the game.
Columbus would again extend their lead to three goals before the mid way point. Craig Stahl worked hard to stuff the puck into the Seals net. McMonagle continued his big night adding his forth goal just before the game's midway point.
