Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - After downing the Calgary Vipers in the series opener, the Victoria Seals took back to Royal Athletic Park for game two on Saturday night. With nearly 2,300 fans filing into the ballpark, Calgary sent veteran Evan Greusel (2-1) on the mound, with the Seals turning to Eduardo Baeza (1-3) on the hill.
For the second game in a row it would be Calgary who opened the scoring in the top of the first, when Jorge Mejia took a 3-0 pitch from Baeza out of the park for a 1-0 lead. The Vipers would double their advantage in the second with a double from Ivan Reyes followed up by an RBI single from catcher Rick Guarno. After Mejia collected a double to put two men on the third inning, Calgary would stretch their lead to 5-0 on a three-run home run from Clint Johnston.
The Seals would respond in the bottom of the frame, however, when Wilver Perez launched his second home run of the season over the left field fence to bring Victoria within three. Capitalizing on a throwing error from Reyes in the fifth frame, Perez scored again to bring the score to 5-3 headed to the sixth.
Then, another long ball from the Vipers in the top of the sixth restored Calgary's five-run advantage. Nelson Castro hit a three-run shot off of Seals' reliever Ezequiel Ruvalcaba to put the Vipers out front 8-3. But another response from the home side came in the bottom of the frame, when Victoria put together four two-out hits for three runs to again narrow the Calgary lead to just two runs.
With both Mac Suzuki and Ethan Katz stepping out of the bullpen for Calgary and Victoria, respectively, the scored remained 8-6 Vipers heading into the ninth and final inning. The visitors would open the game up in the top of the ninth, however, using a two-RBI double from Guarno and a grand slam from Castro off of Graham Campbell to send the fans headed to the exits in Victoria.
Despite loading the bases against closer Alan Webb, the Seals could not close the eight-run gap, and fall by a 14-6 final in the second game of the set. Eduardo Baeza takes his fourth loss on the season for Victoria, while Vipers starter Evan Greusel improves to 3-1 with his second win over the Seals this season. Nelson Castro had a career night at the dish, finishing 3-for-6 with two home runs and 7 RBI's, while Calgary's ninth batter in the lineup, Rick Guarno, also picked up 3 RBI's in the win.
