Sea Dawgs Outlast Cougarz

Wilmington, NC- It wasn't until just under 7 minutes to go in the 4th quarter that the Sea Dawgs secured their first lead of the game. The play of the game came when Adrian Malcolm threw a behind the back pass to Zach Herrmann on a fast break for a layup to give the Sea Dawgs a 99-98 lead. The Dawgs closed the game strong, beating the Carolina Cougarz 116-108.

This victory moves the Wilmington Sea Dawgs to 5-1 for the season and atop the CBL standings. Jim Jones, Zach Herrmann, and Aaron Scott each led the Dawgs with 17 points apiece. Malcolm had a big game off the bench, scoring a season high14 points and doing what he does best from his role position.

"Coach wants me to go out, play hard, rebound, play hard defense and bring energy," said Malcolm. "We came out slow, but we always seem to win in the end. It was a big win for us."

This wasn't the greatest game played by the Sea Dawgs as their effort and hustle lacked, but in the end they pulled off the victory to remain undefeated at home this year.

"I thought we played poorly for 36 minutes. I was not pleased with our effort, and our energy, but we keep fighting and made some plays down the stretch," said head coach Dale Kuhl. "Give them (Carolina) credit, they played great, but at the end of the day we did what we needed to do to get a win."

The Cougarz led by as many as 13 points midway through the 2nd quarter. Billy McDade had the hot hand as he knocked down 6 three pointers in the game, leading the Carolina with 19 points.

The Sea Dawgs we able to cut the lead to 3 points at halftime, and managed to stay close after a couple big three pointers from Jim Jones.

The lead was town to two points by the start of the 4th quarter. After back to back three's by Carolina, the Sea Dawgs found themselves down by 8 points again. Wilmington was able to rally behind the strong play of Donielle Davis and Zach Herrmann in the 4th to overcome the deficit and get the lead.

Herrmann scored 9 of his 17 points in the quarter and played an instrumental role in executing the comeback

"The guys count on me to be a leader and I just try to play my best when it counts," said Herrmann. "I felt a lot more comfortable in the 4th than I did in the 1st quarter and some shots starting falling for me."

The Sea Dawgs will be in action again at home on Friday, May 28th at the Cape Fear Schwartz Center. Game time is set for 7:05.
