Sea Dawgs Defeat Sabers Once Again

June 4, 2010 - Continental Basketball League (CBL)
Wilmington Sea Dawgs News Release

Wilmington, NC- It wasn't the 36-point blowout like the last time these two teams played, but again the Sabers were no match for the Sea Dawgs, as the defeat the Sabers 109-98. This win puts the Wilmington at 7-2 for the season, and knocks the Sabers down to 4-5.

The Dawgs played the majority of the game with a 15 or 20 point lead. By halftime, the score was 57-39, and a full on rout was expected. However, with much credit to the Birmingham Sabers and coach Paul Smith, they continued to battle and play hard the entire game.

With about 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Sabers had cut the lead to 5 points after a 15-0 run, and the Schwartz Center got a little less loud.

Although his team had already beaten the Sabers by 36 points a couple weeks earlier, Coach Kuhl remained calm during the game and had faith his team would not relax too much and they would finish strong.

"We play every game as just one game, so what we did last week is always irrelevant," said Kuhl. "It's not about trying to get better, we want to be perfect, and it's never about who we play, its about what were doing on the basketball court to meet our goals."

That confidence is shown through the temperaments of the players as they easily glided back to a 13 point lead shortly after the Sabers cut it down to 5 with two threes by Joe King and another patented putback slam by Kadiri Richards.

Scoring wise it was an attack of the Aaron's Thursday night. Guard Aaron Scott led the Dawgs with 22 points, nailing 4 three pointers in the process. Center Aaron Coombs controlled the paint with his large frame and dropped in 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Coombs was also confident in his coach and ability as he knew the last game against the Sabers was irrelevant.

"We didn't care how much we beat them by last time," Coombs stated. "We came ready to play and establish our identity and set the tone. When we play our way, we are difficult to beat."

Again, Coach Kuhl was impressed with his big man tonight. "Coombs was huge tonight. He is the biggest guy in the league. When he's active and aggressive he can set the tone and we can be very tough."

The Sea Dawgs had a balanced offensive attack, having 7 different players hit double digits. They also hit 11 three pointers in the game to balance the big scoring efforts of Donielle Davis (13 points) and Coombs down low.

The Dawgs will be in action again this Saturday night at 7:05 at the Schwartz Center against the second place Savannah Wildcats. Gates open at 6 pm.
