SD Loyal Is Back on the Road to Face Phoenix Rising FC

SD Loyal travels back to Phoenix for a Week 6 match to be broadcasted on Fox 5 San Diego. The match will also be broadcasted on Azteca 33 in Spanish.

WHAT: It's back on the road for SD Loyal. And it's back to the desert where the season began. Manager Landon Donovan's team faces Phoenix Rising in a Pacific Division Match.

MATCH PREVIEW:

The first home match of the season is complete. It was the first win for SD Loyal. Donovan's team looks to carry momentum from a 2-1 win against Las Vegas Lights FC into Saturday's second visit to Wild Horse Pass stadium. The last time SD Loyal played in the desert resulted in a 4-1 loss to open the 2021 season. But that was a different SD Loyal team. Donovan has added some players since then to help reinforce the backline and attack. The newest addition is defender Callum Montgomery who was brought on loan from MLS side Minnesota United earlier this week. Jack Maher, Miguel Ibarra and Miguel Berry were also added last week. All three contributed to SD Loyal's win against Las Vegas. Donovan is slated to return to the sidelines after the manager served a one match suspension due to a red card during a loss to Louisville City FC. Assistant coach Nate Miller filled in last week, leading the team to its first three points of the 2021 USL Championship season.

Phoenix is coming off a 1-0 win against Sacramento Republic. The recent win is part of Phoenix's fast start to the 2021 USL Championship season that has the team from the desert in first place in the Pacific Division at the start of this week. Phoenix has won four of its five games with a loss coming against the defending Eastern Conference champions Tampa Bay Rowdies. That matchup was supposed to be the USL Championship final in 2020 but it was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Tampa Bay Rowdies organization.

Phoenix came into this season as one of the favorites to win the division and make a run to the conference title. It has shown consistency early in the season, particularly with one of the leagues best offenses. It is the second best in the league in scoring with 14 goals, one behind division rival LA Galaxy II. Phoenix also leads the league in shots with 101.

This is the second time SD Loyal faces Phoenix this season. Both teams faced off in the season opener April 30, a 4-1 road loss for SD Loyal. Phoenix displayed its fire power in that match with key players such as Santi Moar, Jon Bakero, Solomon Asante and Rufat Dadashov. The same players were factors in Phoenix's win against Sacramento last week.
