San Diego Loyal News Release
San Diego, CA - San Diego Loyal SC (SD Loyal) announced today it has acquired Dylan Castanheira (casta-NAIR-uh) on loan from Major League Soccer side Inter Miami CF, pending league and federation approval. The 6-foot-2 goalkeeper from Landing, N.J. joins SD Loyal to add depth to the goalkeeping corps while Trey Muse is out indefinitely after suffering a fractured index finger in his right hand during a match against Las Vegas Lights on Aug, 18.
"When I received the unfortunate news that Trey was going to be out long term, we knew that we needed to bring in depth to help our goalkeeping corps," ¬â¹ ¬â¹said Landon Donovan, EVP of Soccer Operations and Manager. "When Dylan became available, we jumped on the opportunity to bring him here. He'll provide experience and depth to a very, very good goalkeeping corps. We look forward to having him here during our current final push towards the playoffs."
Castanheira joins SD Loyal as it heads into a Week 20 match against LA Galaxy II in a Pacific Division matchup on Sept. 5. The 26-year-old comes from Inter Miami where he signed in January for the team's expansion season after being part of the team's USL League One side Fort Lauderdale CF. He played in 11 matches there in 2020, all of them starts. He had 44 saves during that span, good enough for fifth in the league. Inter Miami had acquired his rights after they were traded from FC Dallas, who drafted Castanheira in the fourth round (88th overall) of the 2019 MLS Superdraft. Castanheira also has USL Championship experience. He signed his first professional contract with Atlanta United 2 in 2019. He played in 21 matches that season.
From 2014 to 2018 Castanheira attended Columbia University, making 44 appearances and earning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Ivy League honors. He also broke the school record for clean sheets in a career with a total of 25.
