
Scott Burt Accepts Coaching Position With Spokane Chiefs

Longtime Alaska Aces player and coach, Scott Burt has accepted the position of Assistant Coach with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, the Aces announced on Monday. Burt has spent the last five seasons with the Aces, including his final three as a player, and the last two years as an Assistant Coach. Burt and his family are currently making plans to relocate to Spokane in time for the beginning of the 2013-2014 WHL season. The Alaska Aces will begin their 2013-2014 season at home on Friday, October 18 at Sullivan Arena when they host the San Francisco Bulls. Burt, 36, had a record-setting playing career that spanned 13 years and concluded in Alaska with a 2011 Kelly Cup Championship. From 2008-2011, Burt served as the captain of the Aces, and led the club to two different appearances in the Kelly Cup Finals, and the 2011 ECHL Championship. That title was Burt's third of his career, and he became the first player in league history to win the Kelly Cup three different times as a player. Burt played in 739 regular season games for six different teams, amassing 463 points (203g, 260a) and 1,316 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 137 playoff games, reaching the finals in six different seasons, and capturing Kelly Cup Championships with Alaska in 2011, and Idaho in 2004 and 2007). He led his team to the playoffs in 12 out of his 13 professional seasons.
His Aces playing career ended with 158 regular season games played. In those games, the Trail, British Columbia native had 88 points (36g, 52a) and 304 PIM for Alaska. Burt also added 12 points (8g, 4a) in 33 playoff games for the Aces. Overall, Burt stands among the all-time leaders in multiple ECHL categories. Not including his earlier years in the WCHL before the merger, the 5'11", 185 lbs. Burt played in 104 ECHL playoff games - more than any other player in league history. He also appeared in 586 regular season games, finishing 12th on the all-time ECHL list at the time of his retirement.
Since his retirement as a player in August of 2011, he has served as an Assistant Coach for the Aces. While a part of the coaching staff, Burt helped guide Alaska to the ECHL's best regular season record in each of his two seasons behind the Aces bench. Alaska went a combined 92-33-19 over those two seasons for winning percentage of .705.
Burt's move back to the WHL brings his career full circle. Prior to turning pro in 1998, Burt played four seasons of junior hockey in the WHL, playing for Seattle, Swift Current, Edmonton, and Red Deer. He culminated his junior career with a terrific season in 1997-1998, notching 41 goals, 77 points and 99 penalty minutes in 68 games.
