Scorpions win overtime thriller

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), clinched their first Santa Ana Star victory with a 5-4 overtime win Wednesday night. Aaron MacInnis picked a great time to score his first Scorpions' goal, 1:51 into the extra session.

After three tough games, New Mexico started clicking early. Just 5:20 into the first period Mike Prpich recorded his first professional goal, giving the Scorpions their first lead of the season. It was also the first time the Scorps' lit the lamp in the first period.

The Scorpions skated to the locker room with a first period lead in large part due to goalie Brad Smith's play. Smith, making his first professional start, made great save after great save in the first 20-minutes.

The SteelHounds quickly got on the board in the second period when Joey Sewell's wrist shot beat Smith just 48-seconds into the frame. From that point on the game would be back and forth.

Ryan McLeod reclaimed the lead with his fourth goal in as many games in the middle of the second period. Youngstown tied it again three minutes later when Paul Esdale scored his fourth goal of the season.

Again, the Scorpions would take the lead as Mike Falk ripped a power play shot over goalie Brad Roberts' shoulder. It looked like the Scorpions would take their lead into the second break, but Sewell notched his second goal of the night to tie the game for the third time.

Youngstown grabbed their first lead of the game at 8:52 when Mark Johnson banged a rebound goal home. The Scorpions did not back down and Falk answered with his second goal of the night three minutes later.

The same two teams will meet Friday night at the Santa Ana Star Center. The puck will drop at 7:35 PM on WWE Night. Fans coming to the game will be able to meet and get autographs from superstar Mick Foley. Those not in attendance can tune into the game on 610 The Sports Animal.
