SteelHounds' winning streak ends in OT

The Youngstown SteelHounds lost their first game of the season Friday night in Rio Rancho, New Mexico as the Scorpions recorded a 5-4 victory in OT. The loss ends the Hounds of streak of 4 straight victories and 7 straight dating back to last season.

The SteelHounds struggled to get offensive chances early in the first period, due to four penalties in the first seven minutes giving the Scorpions four early power play chances. New Mexico would capitalize on Mike Prpich's goal on a rebound from defensemen Rob Guinn's shot from the point to give the Scorpions a 1-0 lead after the first period. The SteelHounds squandered a 2-man advantage for 2:12 seconds in the frame.

The second period saw a lot of scoring, beginning with Hounds forward Joey Sewell notching his first goal of the season, firing a shot high stick side on Scorpions goalie Brad Smith to tie the game at 1-1. New Mexico would re-take the lead just over 7 minutes later as forward Ryan McLeod deflected a rebound over the shoulder of Hounds goalie Brad Roberts to give the Scorpions a 2-1 advantage. The SteelHounds tied the game again on the powerplay at the 10:59 mark of the frame as Paul Esdale scored his fourth goal of the season taking shot from the point to make the score 2-2. The Scorpions would take the lead for the second time in the period when forward Mike Falk took a shot from the top of the right slot over the shoulder of Roberts for the 3-2 lead. The goal was New Mexico's second powerplay goal of the night. The Hounds would tie the score at 3 just before the end of the period as Joey Sewell recorded his second goal of the night.

The third period saw Hounds captain Jeff Christian get sent off the ice for elbowing after retaliating to Vladimir Hartinger's charge on Chris Richards. The third period ended in a 4-4 tie with the SteelHounds taking the lead briefly on Mark Johnson's first goal of his professional career, dumping in a loose puck in front of Smith for the 4-3 advantage. The Scorpions would tie the game over three and a half minutes later on the powerplay as Falk scored his second goal of the game.

Scorpions defensemen, Aaron MacInnis, nephew of former NHL player Al MacInnis, notched the game winning goal in overtime taking a slap shot from the point to give the Scorpions the 5-4 win.

The SteelHounds outshot the Scorpions 40-24 in the contest. New Mexico goalie Brad Smith, making his first professional career start, stopped 36 of 40 shots to earn his first career win, while Brad Roberts stopped 19 of 24 shots and took the loss for the SteelHounds.

The two teams will play the rematch Friday, November 3 with face-off scheduled for 9:35 p.m. EST.
