Yuma Scorpions News Release
(Yuma, AZ) â The Yuma Scorpions announced today that they have traded rookie infielder Luis Munoz to the Fullerton Flyers for a player to be named later, and released rookie catcher Jeff Whitfield. The roster moves bring the Scorpions' Spring Training Roster down to 29 players, still five more than they're allowed for the Opening Day Roster May 26th. Munoz had come to training camp after impressing the Scorpions' coaching staff at the local player tryouts in April to warrant a spot on the roster, but became a victim of a large number of infielders currently on the Scorpions' roster. "Luis is a very talented kid, and gave a great effort," remarked Scorpions' Manager Benny Castillo. "But Luis probably wouldn't have gotten a lot of playing time if he'd stayed with us. I'm happy we were able to find him a spot, and I think that (Fullerton Flyers' Manager) Garry Templeton is excited to have Luis on board." For Whitfield, he came to camp a week early knowing that he was one of three catchers vying for two regular season spots, but despite his efforts, wasn't able to secure a position. "It's really tough to make this decision, because Jeff is such a great kid," said Castillo. "But it's not doing him justice keeping him on the squad when his chances of making it just aren't there right now. It's better to let him go now to give him a chance to catch on with someone else." The move leaves veteran Alexis Hernandez and four-year pro Jacob Guzman as the Scorpions' catching corps.
Meanwhile, tickets are still available for tomorrow night's Scorpions' exhibition game to benefit the United Way. The Scorpions will square off against the Japan Samurai Bears at 7:05PM Saturday at Desert Sun Stadium, and will be the only night exhibition game during spring training. Because it is an exhibition game, fans will get a chance to sit anywhere they want to in the stadium for the same price-all seats are just $4. A major portion of the proceeds will go to benefit the United Way of Yuma. Tickets for that game-as well as all 50 Scorpions' 2005 regular season home games are on sale right now at the Desert Sun Stadium box office, or by calling the Scorpions' ticket office at (928) 726-9149, or by logging onto www.yumascorpions.com and clicking on the "Single game tickets online' link. Seats are still available for all 50 Scorpions' home games in all three price ranges: $10 box seats, $7 reserved seats, and $5 general admission seats. There are also senior, military, and kids' prices for general admission tickets only. Office hours are from 8:30AM to 5:30PM Monday through Friday. Season tickets-as well as 5, 10, and 20-game mini-plans-remain on sale. Those who are purchasing or have already bought season tickets or mini-plans can still purchase VIP parking passes for the entire season at just $90 per vehicle. VIP parking passes allow the holder to park in specially designated areas close to the front gate at Desert Sun Stadium. The Scorpions' inaugural season officially begins on Thursday, May 26th, as the Scorpions travel to face the Mesa Miners in a four-game set. The game will be broadcast live on the flagship station of the Scorpions, KBLU 560AM, starting at 6PM. The Scorpions will kick off their home season with the Scorpions' Opening Day Fan Fest on Monday, May 30th, when the Scorpions host the Surprise Fightin' Falcons at a special time of 5:05PM. The gates at Desert Sun Stadium will open at 3, and fans that come early to the Scorpions' Opening Day Fan Fest will be treated to: 1) the âGuns N' Hoses' charity softball game pitting Yuma Area Law Enforcement against Yuma Area Fire & Emergency Personnel; 2) live music from the band âMogollon'; 3) a flyover from the Black Sheep Squadron. The first 1000 fans through the gates that day will also receive a special Scorpions' Commemorative Ticket of Opening Day, and a free magnet schedule courtesy of Wild West Motorsports. Fans can also purchase the Opening Day Fan Fest Special-which includes a reserved seat ticket, plus a hot dog and a 16-ounce soda-all for only $7-between now and 5:05PM May 30th! There are a limited number of Opening Day Fan Fest Special tickets available, and are subject to sellout.
