SCORPIONS RECAP –

SCORPIONS 4, TULSA 3 – Randy Murphy scored twice in his first game in a Scorpions uniform in over three and a half years to lead the Scorpions to a 4-3 season-opening win at Tulsa on Friday. Murphy tied the game at 2-2 with a power play goal in the second period, then scored the eventual game-winner at 4:43 of the third with a booming slapshot from the right circle. Peter Ambroziak scored a power play goal in the first period and 19 year-old Ivan Svarny picked up his first professional goal to round out the scoring. Clint Wensley added two assists while Miguel Beaudry made 35 saves in goal for New Mexico.

WICHITA 6, SCOPIONS 4 – Wichita scored three times in the first 3:03 of the game and held off a Scorpions comeback for a 6-4 win in the Thunder's home opener on Saturday. The Scorpions whittled the lead down to one goal on three occasions, but could never get the equalizer. Erik Adams had a goal and an assist while Clint Wensley and Randy Murphy each posted a pair of helpers. Mike Possin, Daniel Tetrault and Mike Oliveira scored the other goals.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS –

CORPUS CHRISTI – Frank Bowl IV takes center stage on Friday in the Scorpions' home opener. The Rayz are a completely new team, with a new general manager (Larry Linde), new coach (former Indianapolis coach Ken McRae), and only one returning player – forward Matt Noga. The Rayz blew a 4-0 lead on Friday in a 6-5 overtime loss at Austin before falling 4-2 at Laredo on Saturday. Veteran forward Greg Bullock leads the Rayz with three points (1g-2a). Goalie Josh Blackburn (5.64 GAA) started Friday before giving way to Brent Zelenewich (0-1-1, 4.53 GAA), who came on in relief and started on Saturday. New Mexico swept both legs of the Frank Bowl during the 2003-04 season, winning at Corpus Christi 5-4 in a shootout on Oct. 16 and taking a 3-2 decision at home on Dec. 27.

MEMPHIS – The RiverKings are 1-1-0 after splitting a pair of home games, coming from behind to beat Fort Worth 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday before falling 5-3 to Tulsa on Sunday. Coach Mark Richards begins his first full season behind the bench, and only five players return from last year's team that missed the playoffs. Former NHL defenseman Ted Crowley (2g-2a) is tied with fellow blueliner Derek Landmesser for the team lead with four points each. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Daniel Boisclair got the win on Saturday, while veteran David Lemanowicz took the loss on Sunday.

WELCOME BACK – Randy Murphy's two goals were his first in a Scorpions uniform since March 15, 2001, when he scored twice at Amarillo. Murphy has returned to New Mexico this season after spending the past three years with the Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals of the United Hockey League. The 32 year-old native of Mississauga, Ontario has four points (2g-2a) in his first two games back.

YOUTH HAS BEEN SERVED – Ivan Svarny doesn't turn 20 until Halloween, but that didn't stop the second-youngest player in the CHL from scoring a clutch goal on Friday at Tulsa. Svarny gave the Scorpions a 3-2 lead just 1:35 after Randy Murphy had tied the game. Only Colorado forward David Svagrovsky, who doesn't turn 20 until Dec. 21, is younger than Svarny.

STINGERS – The Scorpions currently the Central Hockey League on the power play by converting five of their 12 chances for a 41.7 percent success rate... In fact, five of the team's eight goals this season have come with the man advantage... Clint Wensley is tied with Randy Murphy for the team lead with four points (all assists)... In fact, all but three skaters who have seen game action are already on the scoresheet... Even goalie Miguel Beaudry got into the action with an assist on Murphy's first goal on Friday at Tulsa... The Scorpions will try to continue the success they had at home during the 2003-04 season when they posted a 21-10-1 record.
