San Antonio Scorpions News Release

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (Wednesday, October 21, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions pitched a shutout on the road and earned a point in a hard fought 0-0 draw with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. In spite of the impressive team performance, the result officially eliminated the Alamo City boys from contention for a return to The Championship (the NASL's four-team postseason tournament).

The first half saw the Scorpions control the majority of the possession, but neither side was able to create much in the way of chances. The best opportunities for the Scorpions came on back-to-back attacks with Kris Tyrpak and Billy Forbes linking up. First in the 31', Tyrpak sent a square ball in from the right side of the box that Forbes quickly one-timed at goal. The shot was on frame and Strikers goalkeeper David Meves was only able to knock the ball upwards with his forearm, but he was able to then corral the rebound before Forbes could follow through.

The next time up the pitch, Forbes looked to send in a ball for an onrushing Tyrpak from the left wing, but the Fort Lauderdale defense was able to clear the danger before the Texas native could get onto the end of the cross.

The second half saw goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes put on another shot-stopping display as the Scorpions' backstop made save after save to preserve the 0-0 draw. The most impressive came midway through the frame when the NASL's leading goal scorer, Stefano, had an open shot from ten yards away. The Brazilian tried to chip the ball over Fernandes as he went to ground, but the Portuguese international showed incredible reflexes to get a hand on the ball and knock it out of harm's way.

This Saturday, the Scorpions play their final home game of 2015 against the New York Cosmos. The match at Toyota Field will be highlighted by Real Madrid legend Raúl's first and only appearance in San Antonio.
