Two big innings may have doomed the Yuma Scorpions? playoff chances, as the Chico Outlaws routed the home squad 17-2 in front of 3,152 fans at Desert Sun Stadium on Friday night.

Chico and Yuma were tied at 0-0 before the first-half champion Outlaws erupted for 17 runs in the third and fourth innings.

Scorpions starting pitcher Steve Soja gave up the first 12 runs in the offensive explosion on 12 hits, followed by reliever Aaron Wilson giving up the last five.

Soja got his fourth loss of the season (6-4), pitching just 3 2/3 innings.

In the third inning, the Outlaws (37-30, 12-17) had seven hits, highlighted by RBI triples from Jesse Kovacs and Jason Matteucci.

After the seven-run third, the fourth didn?t start any better for the Scorpions as Daniel Nava and Scott Dragicevich led off the frame with back-to-back homers.

In the fourth, the Outlaws sent a season-high 15 batters to the plate, scoring 10 more runs to put away the Scorpions (39-28, 18-11).

Steve Boggs led Chico?s onslaught with a 4-for-6 night, driving in a run and scoring two more.

Todd Gossage had a team-high four RBIs and Kovacs added three.

Overall, Chico pounded out a club-record 20 hits including 15 in the two big innings.

Chico left-hander Matt Campbell (2-0) got his second professional win, pitching five innings, allowing just two runs on three hits.

With the loss, the Scorpions fall four games behind league-leading Long Beach as the Armada defeated the St. George RoadRunners 7-3.

With the victory, Long Beach (22-7) is four games ahead of the Scorpions going into the final eight games of the season.

The two teams square off at 7 p.m. in Long Beach for the first of a two-game series. The Scorpions hold an 8-3 edge in head-to-head matchups this year, but are just 3-3 at Blair Field.
