Yuma Scorpions News Release

(Yuma, AZ) - The Yuma Scorpions announced today that they have released rookie first baseman/outfielder Joe Giacomiazzio. The announcement comes after the team's return to Yuma from a 9-game road swing.

Giacomiazzio carved out a roster spot with his performances during spring training, but wasn't able to get the bat heated up once the regular season started. Giacomiazzio leaves the Scorpions after batting only .158 in 16 games-with no homers and 1 run batted in. Giacomiazzio started in 4 of the 16 games he played in, and had 3 hits in 19 at-bats. "Joe is a great guy-on and off the field," said Scorpions' Manager Benny Castillo about the move. "But we just couldn't wait any longer for him to show what we thought he could do. We wish Joe the best." No immediate replacement has been named to fill Giacomiazzio's roster spot.

The Scorpions begin a brief three-game homestand tomorrow night against the Mesa Miners. Friday night is Fireworks Night. After the 7:05 game, the skies above Desert Sun Stadium will light up with a spectacular fireworks display-sponsored by Truly Nolen and KCFY Radio 88.1 FM. Saturday night at 7:05, the first 1000 fans through the Desert Sun Stadium gates will get a free Scorpions' Mini-Bat-courtesy of the City of Yuma Fire Department, Univision Channel 7 and Entravision Radio. Sunday night at 6:05, the homestand winds up with Sun Sundays. Check for Scorpions' discount coupons in The Sun Newspaper. Ticket information can be obtained by stopping by the Scorpions' Ticket Office at Desert Sun Stadium (between 9AM and 6PM weekdays), calling the Scorpions' Ticket Office at 726-9149, or logging on to yumascorpions.com and clicking on the ‘Single Game Tickets' link.
