Yuma Scorpions News Release
(Yuma, AZ) â The Yuma Scorpions announced today that they have released former major league pitcher Joe Davenport. Davenport came into the season as the experienced ace of the Scorpions' pitching staff, but his control problems became well-documented even just two weeks into the season. Davenport's swan song came last night against the Long Beach Armada at Desert Sun Stadium. Despite the fact that he had his longest outing of the season-4 1/3 innings, Davenport's control problems began with the first pitch he threw-plunking Armada centerfielder Ryan Webb in the neck-and ended with the last pitch he threw-hitting Armada catcher Chris Miller in the back. In all, Davenport gave up three earned runs on only two hits and struck out 5, but also walked three, threw two wild pitches, and hit six batters. Davenport leaves the team with an 0-3 record in 4 appearances, and a 13.03 ERA. "He's a veteran pitcher that knows he has to produce right off the bat," said Scorpions' Manager Benny Castillo. "He didn't have a problem with his velocity or his off-speed pitches. But because Joe's a sinkerball pitcher, he had a lot of problems controlling where his fastball went." Castillo added that he doesn't expect to fill Davenport's roster spot for several days. The team is currently one under the GBL roster limit of 24 players.
