Surprise Fightin' Falcons News Release
Another day, another home win for the Surprise Fightin' Falcons. The Falcons improved to 7-1 at Surprise Stadium this season with a 7-6 win over the Fullerton Flyers Monday night in the first game of a three-game series.
Outfielder Josh Green hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning, bringing home pitch hitter Leif Ekelund to give the Falcons their fourth straight win at home. The Falcons improved to 7-4 overall and remained in first place in the Arizona Division.
Three Falcons players had two hits on the night, including Green, who hit his second homer in three games into the right field grass. SS Paul Powell, a mid-game replacement for Kevin Brand, who was ejected in the fourth inning for arguing an umpire's call, smacked a home run deep to centerfield in his first at-bat in the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie.
Long Beach had a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but Surprise came back with two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fourth. Fullerton rallied, however, with three runs in the fifth inning.
Starter Chris Russ made it through seven innings and left with a one-run lead after seven innings. But Mike Reeves, a player who the Falcons signed earlier in the day, gave up the tying run. Green's sac fly in the bottom of the eighth, however, made Reeves the winner in his debut.
Ignacio Estrada Jr. pitched the ninth for his second save of the season.
Reeves, a right-hander, and left-hander Craig Frydendall were both signed earlier in the day to replace righties Mike Shoaf and Jerome Rey, who were released.
Surprise and Fullerton (4-4) continue their three-game series Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Steve Rain (0-2, 10.50) faces Fullerton's Josh Stevens (0-1, 11.57).
