[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The Scorpions gave Randy Murphy his first win as a head coach with a 4-2 victory over Austin Thursday night. New Mexico came out fast and never let up throughout the entire night. The Scorpions grabbed the lead on the very first shift of the game.
Blair Stayzer picked up his own rebound and scored 19 seconds into the contest. New Mexico made it 2-0 when Andrew Smale picked up a lose puck and tucked it under the crossbar 7:52 into the first period.
Just like the opening frame, the Scorps came out fast in the middle frame as Craig Macdonald scored his first goal of the season at the 1:01 mark. The Ice Bats fought back when Jason Tessier put Austin on the board during a two-man advantage. Zech Klann made it a one-goal game late in the second period with a rebound goal, his first of the season.
The third period featured plenty of penalties and special teams made the difference in the final frame. The Scorpions penalty kill worked well and even produced the insurance goal. With the Scorpions shorthanded, Stayzer picked up a breakaway goal and his team a 4-2 lead.
