SCORPIONS RECAP
SCORPIONS 3, LUBBOCK 2 (SO) â The Scorpions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, then held on in the shootout for a 3-2 victory over the Cotton Kings, the first time in nine games between the clubs this season that the road team won. Tyler Baines put the Scorpions on the board, then saw Pete Brearley double the advantage with a shorthanded goal. After Lubbock tied the game early in the third period, the Scorps had several great chances to go back on top but were denied by Lubbock goalie Mike Brusseau. Brusseau had no such luck in the shootout, as Vladimir Hartinger, Baines and Ben Gorewich all scored while Scott Myers allowed just one goal in four attempts by the Cotton Kings. The Scorpions finished the season series with a 5-3-1 record against Lubbock, going 4-0-1 in the last five games.
LAREDO 2, SCORPIONS 0 â The Bucks scored in each of the first two periods to claim a 2-0 win and the rubber match of the three-game season series. Leading scorer Eric Schneider scored on the power play in the opening period, as his pass attempt deflected off Scorpions center Ben Gorewich and into the net. David Myson doubled the lead in the second for Laredo. Luciano Caravaggio had a strong game in goal for New Mexico with 37 saves.
AUSTIN 5, SCORPIONS 2 â The Ice Bats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period, but had to hold off the feisty Scorpions down the stretch to claim a 5-2 win. Gerald Tallaire, Dan Price and Pat Brownlee all scored in the first for Austin, but Neal Rech and Adam Robbins countered in the second to get the visitors back within a goal. Price added his second of the game in the third and Kelly Smart put it away with a shorthanded empty net goal. Scott Myers stopped 18 shots.
SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS
AMARILLO â The Scorpions have had their troubles with the Gorillas this season, going 2-5 against Amarillo. The Gorillas have won four straight games to move into a second-place tie with Oklahoma City in the Northwest Division. The teams will play twice in six days beginning Friday in Amarillo. As they have been all season, Amarillo is led by Henry Kuster with 54 points (28g-26a), followed still by Dorian Anneck (18g-28a-46pts).
Kuster has been the hottest player for the Gorillas with 11 points (3g-5a) in his last five games. Anneck has nine points (5g-4a) against the Scorps. Goalies Steve Debus (18-8-1, 2.64 GAA) and Shawn Degagne (13-9-0, 2.77 GAA) share the duties between the pipes.
WICHITA â It's been a struggle all season for the Thunder, which is currently 1-7 in February as the teams meet for the first time this season on Saturday. Wichita is 4-10-0 since former Odessa assistant Derek Laxdal took over as head coach in mid-January. All-Star Travis Clayton leads the Thunder in scoring with 67 points (23g-44a) with Jason Duda (21g-38a-59pts) right behind. Tom Gomes (22g-23a-45pts) has a goal in six straight games.
The Thunder is sixth in the CHL scoring 3.31 goals per game, but last allowing 4.27 goals against per outing. Former Odessa netminder Grant Sjerven is 1-7-0 with a 4.33 GAA since coming out of retirement to join the Thunder. The Scorpions were 2-1-0 against Wichita last season, including a 4-3 overtime win at home on March 9, 2002. The teams meet again in the final game of the season at Wichita on March 16.
BAINES STREAK ENDS â Scorpions winger Tyler Baines had his seven-game goal-scoring streak, the longest in the Central Hockey League this season, ended with Friday's 2-0 loss at Laredo. Baines did tie the team mark for longest point-scoring streak this season, equaling the mark set by Chris Richards and Mario Dumoulin earlier in the season. The Lethbridge, Alberta native is third on the Scorpions this season with 17 goals and 48 points. He leads the team with a +6 plus/minus rating.
PLAYOFF PICTURE â The Scorpions are three points behind Corpus Christi for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. The Scorps are currently in sixth, one point behind Lubbock for fifth. The Rayz play half of their remaining 14 games at home, while Lubbock has eight of their last fifteen contests on home ice. Both of New Mexico's nearest competitors play four games in five nights this week beginning Wednesday.
STINGERS â The Scorpions are 2-3-1 on their seven-game road trip heading into Friday's finale at Amarillo... Pete Brearley was placed on the 14-Day Injured Reserve list after suffering a concussion in Thursday's game at Lubbock... Brearley lost his footing and crashed heavily into the boards after scoring a shorthanded goal... Adam Robbins was activated off Injured Reserve in time for Thursday's contest, his first trip back to Lubbock against the team he spent the last two seasons with... The Scorpions play seven of ten games at home beginning with Saturday's return to Tingley against Wichita.
