San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - After losing a slugfest last night 12-11, the Surf Dawgs lost a close game today, falling to the Yuma Scorpions 5-2. Jorge Perez (3-1), who has gotten all three of his victories against the Surf Dawgs this season, went the distance for the Scorpions completeing a seven-hitter. Justin Ottman (2-2) was saddled with a hard luck loss. After escaping jams often during the game, he could not get out of a fateful seventh inning jam where the deciding runs would come across the plate for Yuma.
The Surf Dawgs gave up the first run of the game yet again this season. Jason Dewey hit a ground-rule double to lead off the second inning for the Scorpions. Then Juan Lebron walked to put two on with no one out. After a Jacob Guzman strikeout, Hector Tena singled to left to load the bases. Kalen Norten would hit a bases loaded single to drive in Dewey and Yuma was up 1-0.
In the third, Yuma (9-15) would strike again but this time it was Billy Malone that stung the Surf Dawgs (9-15), hitting a long home run to left field to make it 2-0 Scorpions.
San Diego would answer back in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Scott Goodman doubled to start off the inning. Goodman would move to third on a Nick Guerra ground out and score on a Tony Garcia sacrifice fly to center.
Seth Pietsch, who was 1-for-4, singled to start of the Surf Dawgs sixth. Goodman followed that up with a walk and San Diego was in business. Pietsch would advance on a Guerra fly out to put runners at the corners for Garcia. Garcia lifted a very shallow fly ball to center field and Pietsch tagged up to dash home. The throw came in before Pietsch scored, but Piestsch slid head first around the swipe tag to tie the game at two.
Yuma scored the go ahead run plus one in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game. They would tack on one more in the top of the ninth to make it 5-2.
The finale of this series will take place tomorrow at 7:05 PT. Chris Gale (0-2) will take the mound in search of his first win of the season for the Surf Dawgs. The game marks the last of the homestand, as they will play on the road until a return home on July 7th.
