Scorpions "Go for Blood" as local blood supplies drop

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.] --- Blood supplies remain in critical shortage as severe winter weather continues throughout the country. An urgent appeal for donors and blood donations was announced January 1st by United Blood Services, the sole provider of blood and blood products for hospitals and clinics in New Mexico and the Four Corners area.

The New Mexico Scorpions have jumped into the fray to replenish needed blood and announced a very special blood drive to be held Friday, January 26th at American Toyota Scion, I-25 and Alameda.

Scorpions' fans are urged to roll up their sleeves from 12-4 p.m. at the bloodmobile. All donors will receive a "buy-one-get-one free" voucher to a future Scorpions game and be entered to win a team autographed hockey stick.

"The Scorpions are proud to 'go for blood' and team up with United Blood Services to make this blood drive happen," said Rick Carden, Scorpions General Manager. "Blood shortages can affect all of us and we want to do our part."

While appointments are encouraged, walk-ins will be accepted. To make an appointment, log-on to www.unitedbloodservices.org. Click on "schedule a blood donation" and enter the sponsor code: "Scorpions" or call 800-333-8037 ext. 232.

There is no substitute for human blood and United Blood Services estimates a daily need of 320 units to serve the hospitals, clinics and commitments for blood and blood products. A unit of blood lasts 42 days once it is donated. A unit of platelets lasts 7 days before it expires. Due to the short "shelf life" of blood and blood products, an ample supply is always necessary, therefore donors are always needed. Type O-positive and O-negative are in extremely low supply, though all blood types are needed.

A regular whole blood donation takes little time, normally about an hour. If you are 17 years old or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, have not made a regular whole blood donation in the past eight weeks, have not acquired a new tattoo within the past twelve months and are not currently taking antibiotics, you may be eligible to donate whole blood. Please bring your ID. Eat healthy meals and drink plenty of fluids for several days before you donate.

United Blood Services has been the area's non-profit community blood provider since 1951, and serves patients in 42 hospitals in New Mexico and the Four Corners Region. The United Blood Services network is one of the nation's oldest and largest non-profit blood service organizations and is a founding member of 's Blood Centers and the American Association of Blood Banks.
