New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The fans were entertained on Halloween Eve with an offensive battle. The Scorps though were spooked by the Jackalopes 6-4.
The first period was dominated by the goaltenders. Mike Minard and Mike Gorman combined for 22 saves, many of them thwarting quality scoring chances. The lone goal came when Emery Olauson picked up his first goal of the season at the 9:24 mark.
Goals came at a faster pace in the second period. The Scorpions tied it up when Dominic Osman put a rebound home at the 2:13 mark.
Odessa went on the offensive reclaiming the lead with two in less than a minute. John Kozoriz tapped in a power play goal giving the Jackalopes a 2-1 lead. Odessa increased the lead when Dominic Leveille scored for the fifth time this season.
The Scorpions came back with more crashing of the net. The power play finally clicked as Osman picked up his second goal of the game. After being pushed into the crossbar, Osman righted himself and slid the puck into the net making it a 3-2 contest.
The Jackalopes came out of the locker room for the third period and immediately extended their lead. Nathan Ward's power play goal gave his team a 4-2 lead.
The Scorps fought back with a power play goal of their own. Aaron MacInnis' shot missed the net but ricocheted off the board right to Vladimir Hartinger who flicked it into the net.
The see-saw battle continued when Mike McDonald won a draw back to Sylvain Dufrense. Dufrense launched the shot towards the net where McDonald tipped it through Minard's legs. It was McDonald's first professional goal, and it turned out to be a game winner.
Kevin Harvey brought the crowd back to their feet with his first goal of the season. With the Scorps goaltender pulled, Sebastien Thinel iced the game for the Jacks with an empty net goal.
The Scorps will head to Amarillo for an affair with the rival Gorillas Friday night. The game can be heard on 610 The Sports Animal or seen for free on CHL Network starting at 6:05 p.m.
The next chance to see New Mexico on home ice is when they start a four game home stand against Rocky Mountain Saturday. It will be youth hockey night at the Star Center. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
