
Scorpions finish off Armada

YUMA, Ariz. - The Yuma Scorpions finished off a two-game sweep over the Long Beach Armada with a 9-3 win on Sunday night at Desert Sun Stadium in front of 922 fans.
Yuma stayed perfect in the second half of the Golden Baseball League season (5-0) as Mike Goss led the way with his evening of 2 of 4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI.
Yosvany Almario also went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Pascual Matos added his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning.
Starting pitcher Eric Maydew earned his second consecutive win (3-1), going six innings while allowing two runs on five hits. The Wheat Ridge, Colo. native struck out five batters and walked two.
The Scorpions outhit the Armada 12-6, as three runs in both the third and fourth innings were enough to gain a comfortable advantage over Long Beach.
A.J. Valentine also had two hits for Yuma.
Matt Saucedo got a three-inning save, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out two. It's Saucedo's third save of the season.
Long Beach centerfielder John Kaplan hit his third home run of the series, a two-run homer in the fourth inning. He finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Former Scorpion Gabriel Mayorga led the team with two hits.
Yuma will try to extend its win streak in Reno on Tuesday night as they face the Silver Sox, with Steve Soja (5-3) starting on the mound.
