Yuma Scorpions News Release

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Yuma Scorpions' season-long losing streak was extended to four games as the Orange County Flyers defeated the Scorpions 6-1 Sunday afternoon in front of 1,015 fans at Goodwin Field.

The Flyers got another stellar performance for their ace Reed Dickert, as he went seven innings, striking out 11 and shutting out the top offense in the Golden Baseball League.

After giving up a lead-off bloop single to Yuma second baseman Hector Bernal in the 1st inning, Flyers starting pitcher Dickert settled in and dominated the Scorpions, giving up only three hits.

It wasn't only Dickert that led to the frustration of the Scorpions as the Orange County lineup continued to produce, busting out with 11 hits and six runs to give Scorpions starting pitcher RHP Marco Solis (1-1) his first loss on the season in his debut in the Scorpions rotation.

Solis pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and striking out five.

The Flyers got on the board in the third inning, scoring three runs started off by the GBL's leader in batting average and on-base percentage Aaron Davis, as he reached base on an error by Yuma first baseman Nik Crouch.

Flyers second baseman David Bacani continued his recent hot hitting by following with a double that shot off Scorpions third baseman Henry Calderon's glove. Davis scored from third on centerfielder's Garry Templeton's ground out to short to give the Flyers their first run.

Flyers designated hitter Scott Goodman capped off the inning when he launched a 1-0 pitch from Solis over the right-field fence for a two-run home run, his second on the season, for a 3-0 Flyer lead after three innings.

The Scorpions tried to respond in the top of the 4th inning and were helped by Dickert walking the first two batters of the inning.

The Flyers went on to add another run in the fifth when Templeton and Goodman hit back-to-back singles and Scorpions catcher Pascual Matos followed with a throwing error trying to pick off Goodman at first base that ended up in right field and allowed Templeton to score from second.

As Dickert was continuing to put zeroes on the board, the Scorpions started to show their frustration from dropping four of five games to the second place Flyers and seeing their cushion in first place narrow from 3 1/2 games to 1/2.

In the sixth inning, Yuma left fielder Rich Janeway got tossed from the game for arguing a questionable third-strike call.

The Flyers added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth when Davis knocked in two runs with a single to left. Davis was 1 for 4 in the game with an RBI and a run scored.

The top of the order for the Flyers came through as the first four hitters in the lineup combined for seven hits, three RBIs, and four of the six runs scored.

The Flyers improved to 11-6 on the season with the win. The Flyers have now won 4 in a row and went a dominating 10-2 in their first home stand of the season. Meanwhile, Yuma fell to 3-6 on the road but still have the top record in the GBL at 12-6.

The Scorpions now head out on the road for a 3-game series against the third place Chico Outlaws starting Monday at 7:05pm. The game can be heard on KBLU 560 AM and yumascorpions.com.
