San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

YUMA - It looks like it is going to be a see-saw series for the Surf Dawgs, they fell in Yuma tonight 12-5. San Diego (1-2) must now win the final game of the series to come away with a split before returning home on Monday.

San Diego got to Scorpions starting pitcher Chris Langlois (1-0) early when Scott Goodman scored on a Nick Guerra single to make it a 1-0 game in favor of the Dawgs in the top of the first inning. The lead would be short lived as Yuma (2-1) scored three in the bottom half of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.

Surf Dawgs starting pitcher Brent Pourciau (0-1) was shaken a bit in that first inning. Lopez started off the inning with a triple. Pourciau then hit third basemen Henry Calderon to put runners at the corners with no outs. Calderon would steal second with Malone at the plate. Malone then hit a grounder to the shortstop and was retired but Lopez scored from third on the play to make it 1-1. Two batters later, Jason Dewey would hit a two-run home run (1) to give the Scorpions a 3-1 lead. Yuma would retain the lead for the rest of the game.

The Dawgs put up another run in the top of the second to make it 3-2 Scorpions, but that is as close as it would get for San Diego. Catcher Kevin Reinking would leadoff the inning with a single and eventually come around to score on an Adam Mandel groundout. From that point on neither team would score again until the sixth inning when Yuma put up seven runs to pull away.

Pourciau would settle down after that shaky first inning and go on to pitch a solid game only allowing 1 more hit over his last four innings of work. On the night Pourciau threw 5.0 innings, gave up three runs on three hits and struck out two.

Will Carr came on in relief of Pourciau in the bottom of the sixth inning and surrendered seven runs (six earned) on six hits, making it 10-2 Yuma. The Scorpions would bat around in the sixth inning, scoring their runs on a combination of singles, stolen bases and a triple by Eric Pringle.

Yuma added two more runs off reliever Mike Leishman in the eighth inning to make it 12-2. San Diego put up three runs in the top of the ninth to finish off the scoring.

Langlois would get the win for the Scorpions after going 6.0 innings; giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out three.

San Diego's three-four-five hitters combined for four of the team's five RBI's on the game. Nick Guerra led the way with two RBI's, while Seth Pietsch and Scott Goodman each had one. San Diego's newest player, Drew York, made his first appearance in a Surf Dawgs uniform at first base. He was 1-for-4 with a run scored.

The Dawgs and Yuma will duel one more time in the desert before moving the match up to San Diego for their home opener on Monday, June 5. The Surf Dawgs will be looking to finish the short road trip at .500 with a victory tomorrow. The match up will feature two left-handed starting pitchers; Justin Ottman for the Surf Dawgs and Brian Bunyan for the Scorpions. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. PST.
