Flyers Get First Win
June 4, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release
(Chico, CA) What started out as a pitcher's duel through 7 innings, turned into a 3 inning slugfest, resulting in an 8-7 victory for the Flyers.
With 1,345 in attendance, Flyers starter Chris Jakubauskas kept the Outlaws crowd, as well as the Chico bats, quiet for 7 innings.
Jakubauskas got into trouble twice, but was able to bail himself out both times, once by picking off Bobby Gandolfo after a single, and another time by fielding a softly lined bunt, and then whirling and firing to first to double off Whitney Pierce.
The Flyers got on the board first, as Rick Elder hit his first home run of the season to left center field, and then was followed up by Chad Chop's first dinger, as well. Chop's bomb was hit into the trees in right field.
Fullerton added two more runs in the 8th, as Brett Levier (4 for 5 on the night) singled, and then moved to third on a double by Rich Pohle. After Peanut Williams (3 for 4) was intentionally walked, Chop (2 for 5 on the night, and 4 for 9 overall) singled to center, driving in two runs.
The way the Flyers had pitched to that point, the 4 runs seemed to be enough to hold on to win.
They weren't.
The Outlaws scored once in the bottom half of the 8th, but then the Flyers erupted for four of their own in the top of the ninth, 2 scoring on a triple by Williams, and one on a single by Elder.
With an 8-1 lead headed to the bottom of the ninth, it appeared that the Flyers would cruise to their first victory of the 2006 campaign.
They wouldn't.
The Outlaws started chipping away at the Flyer lead, with a series of singles and doubles, scoring 6 runs to bring the game to 8-7.
Flyers rookie left handed closer Matt Lincoln finally ended the threat by getting Chico's Craig Kuzmic to pop out to first and Jason Van Meetren to fly out to center field, sealing the Flyers first win.
The Flyers play a double header against the Outlaws on Sunday, with the first pitch of game 1 scheduled for 5:05 PM.
The Flyers will send Jeremy Sugarman (the opening night starter in 2005 for the Outlaws) to the mound in game 1 versus Chris Searle, and Craig Frydendall will oppose 2005 GBL Pitcher of the Year Grant Gregg in the nightcap.
