Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans and WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast are joined by Levin Rinke Resort Realty and Portofino Island Resort & Spa in the effort to encourage students to read through the 5th annual "Scoop's Reading Challenge." The deadline for registration is February 11, 2009. Teachers may register their classroom by visiting the Pensacola Pelicans website, www.pensacolapelicans.com.

"Scoop's Reading Challenge" offers a fun and unique way to engage students in reading. This incentive-based program is free to all K-8 public, private and home schools in Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties and is easily adaptable for any grade level.

"Scoop's challenge provides my students with another great community based incentive for going beyond the average goals set for school," said Julie Smith, Kindergarten teacher at Oriole Beach Elementary School. "Because the rewards are specifically tailored by me for my students (sometimes specifically for each student) they find the projects assigned are fun to do at home and attainable. We look forward to it every year."

Levin Rinke Resort Realty and Portofino Island Resort & Spa will help provide tickets to a Pensacola Pelicans baseball game for students reaching their reading goals, as well as bookmarks for stepping up to the plate in the challenge. The program is set up on a "base" system. For each reading goal a student completes, they will advance to the next base, thus earning them a ticket voucher for a Pelicans baseball game. AT&T, the Real Yellow Pages, the official yellow pages of the Pelicans will also provide base prizes.

As an added incentive, three "All-Star Readers" from each participating classroom will receive free Pelicans Kids Club memberships.

For more information on the program or to register your classroom, please contact the Pelicans office at 934-8444 or visit the website at www.pensacolapelicans.com.
