Richmond Roosters News Release

Deanna Beaman, Vice President and General Manager of the Richmond Roosters announced this morning that the contract of left handed relief pitcher Matt Schweitzer has been purchased by the Kansas City Royals.

Roosters President Rob Quigg said "We are very excited about the opportunity Matt has been given with the Royals. This (his signing) is the reason we are in the business of baseball. With all of the success the team has accomplished this season, this really caps the year off for us."

Matt finished the 2003 season with a 4-1 record, three saves and an ERA of 1.11. He struck out 96 while walking only 15 in 51 appearances. Opposing batters were only able to muster a .193 batting average against the powerful lefty. Schweitzer holds the Frontier League record for career games pitched at 144.

John Cate, Roosters Director of Baseball Operation, had worked hard at getting someone to notice the impressive performance. "Matt is an outstanding pitcher as well as a top shelf individual who will represent the Roosters well as he goes forward in his career. We congratulate him on his signing and wish him the best as he goes to the next step."

"We are extremely proud of Matt and are elated that all of his hard work has finally paid off and resulted in his much deserved signing by the Royals" said Beaman. "The community should be very proud to have yet another Roosters player take another step towards his dream of playing in the big leagues."

Schweitzer will report to the Royals affiliate in the Arizona Fall League and then will report to their spring training camp for the 2004 season. He will join another Roosters' alumnus in the Royals organization, Morgan Burkhart, who finished the year with Royals AAA affiliate Omaha.
