Schutz Strikes Twice, Pirates Win Again

Springfield, MA - Felix Schutz scored twice including the game winner late in the second period to lead the Portland Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Springfield Falcons in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 2,472 at the MassMutual Center.

Paul Byron netted the other Pirates goal while Matt Generous collected two assists as the Pirates won for the second straight time and extended their point straight to nine games (6-0-3-0). In addition, the Pirates have now collected at least one point in each of their last five road games going 3-0-2-0. The victory also put Portland above.500 for the first time this season at 11-10-3-0.

Colton Fretter and Liam Reddox scored for the Falcons, who lost their fourth in a row to drop to 10-9-3-2 on the season.

For the second straight game the Pirates scored in the opening minute of the contest as Schutz struck just 38 seconds into the game. Byron followed with a power-play goal 15 minutes later to give the Pirates a 2-0 advantage only to be answered 15 seconds later by Fretter's goal to send the game into the first intermission with Portland up 2-1. Reddox tied the game midway through the second period but Schutz struck for his second of the game with just over five minutes left in the stanza as the Pirates carried a 3-2 advantage into the third. Jhonas Enroth took over in the third keeping the Falcons at bay and turning aside all 18 shots he faced in the period.

Springfield out shot the Pirates 29-23 in the game as Enroth posted his second straight victory.
