Schooners Stumble to Fourth Straight Defeat
June 15, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Mystic Schooners News Release
The Mystic Schooners dropped their 4th straight to the Newport Gulls Tuesday night.
The Gulls were able to put a run up on the board early against starting Schooner pitcher Doug Domnarski. Leadoff man Travis Young was able to get on base by an error and scored on an RBI single by Gabe Snyder.
After the first inning, Domnarski was able to settle down a bit, getting big outs to keep runs off the board. In the 5th inning though the Gulls bats heated up. A big 2 out single from Stephen Scott with the bases loaded brought in 2 runs to put the Gulls up 3-0.
Starting pitcher for the Gulls Jackson Goddard was stellar, through the first 4 frames, he didn't allow a Schooner past first base. In the 5th inning, the Schooners were able to put together good situational hitting to get a run across. After walking, a single and fielder's choice allowed Aaron Hill to advance to 3rd base. An RBI groundout by Zach Goldstein scored Hill and put the Schooners on the board 3-1.
The Gulls responded right back in the top of the 6th with a pair of runs. A throwing error by catcher Brett Bond brought in Chris Chatfield and advanced Cole Fabio to 3rd. Another 2 out RBI hit scored another run and extended their lead to 5-1.
In the very next inning, Brett Bond hit a 2 out double down the left field line. Rich Slenker came up next and hit an RBI single to score Bond. These would be the only 2 hits that reliever Derik Beauprez would give up in his 3 innings of work.
Again the Gulls would come right back up to bat to and bring in runs to combat what the Schooners did. Travis Young and Cole Fabio both had RBI singles that scored 2 more Gulls and they went up 7-2.
The Schooners were able to push across one more run in the bottom of the ninth off a RBI triple from Chase Lunceford to left field that rolled all the way to the fence, scoring Aaron Hill from 1st base.
This loss dropped the Schooners to 2-4 in the standings. Wednesday is an off day for the Schooners but they will be back in action at Fitch High School on Thursday versus the Vermont Mountaineers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
