Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - Four home runs by three different Gulls powered Newport to an 11-4 victory against the North Adams SteepleCats on Wednesday night at Cardines Field, as the team improved to 3-3 on the season.
The Gulls, who picked up their first home win in three games at Cardines this summer in front of 1,576 fans, fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second, but took the lead in the bottom of the inning and never looked back, despite being chased by the SteepleCats offense.
Jake Brodt led off the second inning with a double in his first start as a Gull at Cardines, and was followed by Stephen Scott's two-run home run to right. A Shaun Vigeant two-out single later in the same inning was likewise followed by a two-run blast by Chris Chatfield, bouncing off the rooftops of the homes behind Cardines right-field wall.
Up 4-1, Newport starting pitcher Kris Bubic (1-1) allowed a SteepleCats run on two doubles by Dustin Shirley and Nick Riotto in the third, but the Gulls extended the lead back with a Gabe Snyder solo homer in the bottom of the frame, making the score 5-2.
Again the SteepleCats roared back, scoring twice in the fourth inning off of the lefty Bubic, but their bats would be silenced thereafter. Up 5-4, Newport climbed further ahead in the fifth, when Snyder launched his second home run of the contest, a two-run shot to right. The Gulls would bat around in the eighth, tacking on four more runs to go up 11-4.
Bubic pitched effectively for five innings, and reliever Jake Cousins, making his debut, worked four scoreless frames of outstanding ball, striking out seven en route to a save. The SteepleCats, meanwhile, used seven pitchers in the contest, with starter Patrick Ryan picking up the loss.
Newport is on the road Thursday at 6:35 to face the Valley Blue Sox in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Right hander Zach Predergast will get the start. On Friday, the Gulls return home to Cardines to take on the New Bedford Bay Sox for Salve Regina University Night at 6:35 p.m.
